| Hand Signals! My 6 month old Oliver knows a buncha tricks- but he seems to get the confused a lot- EX: "spin" and "sit" to me, they sound similar, so I'm sure that's why he's confused! When I ask him to to a trink sometimes he just goes through them all till he gets the right one. He's a NUT- anyways... about 20 minutes I ago *DING* i had a lightbulb!! I taught him hand signals for all his tricks. My reasoning: he already knew spinning finger meant spin- and that's thet rick he does 100% for the time. So i gave him signals for laydown, sit, rollover and paw. It's amazing. in 20 he knows them all by signal. and he does the one i ask for without hesitation. If anyone else has a confused pup maybe give this a try!!!

| My husbands step-sister who lives in Florida has a rotty who she rescued (actually I believe she has 2) anyway, one of them is def and does sign language...I have never seen it but my MIL says it is amazing what that dog understands with signs...so ya, why not use verbal and visual! Twice the chance of getting it right! Oh and 20 min - wow - smartie pants

hehe well laydown was my full hand faced down (fingers flat) Sit was my pointer and middle finger stuck together (like a peace sign, but pulled together or like the signlanguage "U") faced down to him. Paw is just a hand in front of his face, palm up so he can put his hand in it and rollover was the same signal at laydown but I rock it back and forth kinda of like the miss america wave.... but faced down. spinning is just my pointer making circles (faced downward) to him. He's tuckered out now and sleeping on the couch! Have a good day everyone- let me know if anyone else uses signals for their yorkie KRISTALK2006: and i wonder if there is a connection between children and puppies in the sense that they can signal before they can talk- maybe dogs are along the same wavelength- but just can't talk... although Oliver sure does mumble to me a lot when I don't do what he wants! heeh

| I was going to start a thread about hand signals but you beat me to it. I was wondering how many people use hand signals?? I use to teach my classes all hand signals but other than that I did not see to many people using them. My dogs know hand signals as well as verbal commands. Hand signals are really great especially for deaf dogs because they are so much easier to understand and not get them mixed up because their is a different hand signal for each command. They know sit, stay, way, come, down, stand, heel, finish, roll over, and many more. I highly recommend hand signals, it is a great way to get your dog to pay attention and excellent way to teach a puppy his first commands because they pick up quicker on it.

| it's Pup's do actually learn hand signals faster than voice signals...it's a ot of fun when you give the signal's and not using your voice... Bambie has a just now learn the vice signal sit (she 7 months), but she knew the handsignal when she was 15 weeks... And it's a lot of fun to see how smart the terrier is....for example hiding things and find a stick you touched and they know your smell from others.... |

| We use hand signals and words. If I use the word without the signal he will usually do it. If i use the signal he will always do it. The trainer says dogs are visual and taught us signals for the important ones!
