I have had my yorkie for over a year now. She is 15 months old. We have trained her to go on the pads in the house. We were having a problem with her peeing on the rug in the dining room. It got so bad that we needed to replace the floor and put in laminate. I thought that was going to solve our problems. My husband came downstairs this morning and noticed that she peed on the living room carpet now. He said it look like she has gone there before. I don't know how to stop her from doing this. When we are home she always runs to the pads because she knows she is going to get a treat. She never sniffs the carpet when we are there with her. I can't keep her confined to the kitchen because she will freak out and bark all day. I live in a townhouse so, I don't think my neighbors would appreciate that. At night we leave her downstairs by herself since she doesn't get along with my cats. So, I can't see what she is doing overnight. I'm just so frustrated with this whole thing. I can't afford to keep replacing my carpets. My husband is flipping out about it. If anyone can give me some advice I would appreciate it.

Can you crate her in your bedroom at night so she is not alone? I am sure
she feels lonesome or leftout being alone downstairs at night. Or put her
bed next to yours if the cats are high they can't get at each other. It is a possibility she is going to the bathroom at night for spite knowing she is alone and the cats are with you.

Unfortunately, your best bet is to confine her. Confine her to the kitchen and then train to break the barking. I do not let mine out without supervision...EVER. And most of the time when I go into the back of the house....her world ends at the kitchen door. Good luck ~

When we first got her we tried the crate thing and she wanted nothing to do with it. Whenever she sees the cats she goes nuts. I think she just wants to play with them but, they hate her. There is no way that she would sleep in a bed next to ours. She would definitely want to be in bed with us but, the cats sleep in the bed with us and I feel it would be unfare to kick them out. I thought that she might be doing it because we leave her downstairs but, I don't know what to do. She doesn't know how to act around the cats.

I can sympathize. I have three cats....Ramsey loves her kitty brothers far more than they love her, let me tell ya. BUT they have gotten used to the fact that Ramsey now sleeps in the bed....though not necessarily all 3 cats at the same time. They'll adjust, really.

Ramsey hated her crate too, but I didn't give her a choice. She goes to work with me and had to ride IN that crate. I ignored her screaming....and it was SCREAMING. She now loves her crate....goes in voluntarily, prefers to nap there, and sometimes eats a treat inside.

sorry to say this but your gonna have to stick her in that crate and deal with her screaming for a little while. eventually she will stop the complaining once she realizes that you are not going to let her out whenever she makes a peep. Its tough love, but it needs to be done. She's learned that every time she puts up a fight when going in that crate you'll back down and let her out or give up. you have to show her who's boss. put her in the crate downstairs or in your bedroom and let her bark and complain all she wants. if you worried about your neighbors there is a no bark collar that you can put on her that sprays something smelly dogs don't like every time she barks. she'll learn that when she barks she gets this smelly stuf sprayed at her which she doesn't like. no bark=no smelly stuff.

just keep with it and she'll get it.

have you thought of about a kids play pen... she can see you.. you can put it next to your bed and you can sleep with your arm inside it until she goes nite nite..... I tried that and it really works...... good luck!

Thanks for all the replies. I will show them to my husband and see what he thinks we should do. She is just driving us crazy. I would have thought that she would have grown out of this by now.

Crate or pen training is theonly solution in my opinion. When I place a puppy in its forever home, I request (strongly urge) the new owner to take their vacation time to work with the dog the first week. Your Yorkie is busy training y'all and you hafta take back the alpha role. I LOVE the X-pens and move mine all over the place. I put plastic table clothson the floor/carpet under the pen and turn the sections of the pen back til there are 6 sections instead of 8. That is for sleeping. Then, I open it up all the way for daytime confinement.
Rarely do I sell to peole who have to work long hours and do not have a sitter to come in during the day. Please don't think I am critical of working moms-I was one for all of my life- but Yorkies are so social and they need people stimulation during the day. Maybe you can work out your problems during the summer....Good Luck, it will not be easy..
