| Scary Thunderstorms I have had my 5 yr old furbaby for 8 weeks now. Since I have had her, we have had 2 very quick thunderstorms. Both times, she started shaking and started panting very hard. I have never had a dog this small, so I don't know if it is something that is common with small dogs, and I have never had a dog that is afraid of thunderstorms. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I could do to help keep her calm? The two times that it did happen, I just held her and talked to her. We are supposed to be in our rainy season now, but haven't got much rain as of yet, but we should be getting afternoon thunderstorms on a regular basis any day now. She is alone in the afternoon for about 3 hours, and I'm really concerned about how she is going to be when she is home alone and a storm comes through. |

| Loud sounds can be really scary and tramautic.. Poor baby! You can help her by getting "Rescue Remedy" at your local health store. It's flower essense combination that help bring a calm feeling. It works! I get really nervous (to where I tremble) when faced with public speaking so I tried it and it really helped. Just put a drop on her nose (so she will lick it off) and rub some in her fur & bed. Has/does anyone else use "Rescue Remedy"? How did it help you or your furbaby?

| Being afraid of thunder storms has nothing to do with a dog's size. Many large dogs are totally afraid of storms. We had a thunderstorm several years ago that burst forth with roars of thunder that almost knocked me off my chair (the loudest I have ever heard in my life). After the first, which was the loudest, I heard little feet coming up the hallway and turned around to see my little pup --- He cocked his head and looked at me and said, "Woof!" as though he was saying, "Did you hear that, Mom?" Then he turned around and went back to the front room and slept through the rest of the storm. I have had several large dogs (retrievers, etc) --- who were totally scared to death during any storm - and fire crackers - and gun shots - etc. etc. etc. So - obviously fear has nothing to do with size...it's just the dog. And, if they are afraid of storms, you just have to be there for them and comfort them as best you can. Carol Jean |

| Rescue Remedy is a very good suggestion. You could also try the DAP spray. Also, they make CD's for dogs with thunder v-e-r-y gradually increasing in volume to help desensitize them. Using all 3 would probably be a good idea.

| My Bichon (a big boy at 24 lbs) has always been terrified of thunderstorms. When he was a pup, I coddled him when he started shakeing and acting frantic but I later learned that he handled it much better if I acted like it was nothing and just went about my business. Now he will just come sit between my legs when it happens. he is still scared but I think he handles it much better when I don't make a fuss about it. I think if your pup gets too used to you being there to pick him up and hold him every time it happens it will be harder for him when you are not there during a storm. JMO MaryKay |
