| Bells for housetraining?? Hi, I'll be getting my new puppy "Lily" in 3 weeks. She is currently pee pad trained, at the breeder's home (not sure how successful she is at this point). But anyway, when I bring her home, I plan to train her to go outside the majority of her time. We will also have a pee pad for her in the house. I was just wondering what kind of success anyone has had with the bells? (for the dog/puppy to ring to indicate s/he wants to go outside?) Lily will be 4 months old when we bring her home. I am soooooo excited! Julie |

| I just ordered some bells myself. Currently my 5-month Napoleon is trained to either do it outside when I take him for a walk or he'll run outside to a patio area. The patio area is wonderful because he goes out there by himself (when I leave the sliding door slightly ajar), HOWEVER, after awhile, that place stinks of poo and pee...not to mention hard to clean when he misses the wee wee pad, and I really hate that. So I'm hoping by doing the bell thing, he will be able to effectively communicate to me when he needs to go. I'd love to hear the stories of how the bells are working for other people.

| Loki rings his bells when he needs to go out. The more he needs to go, the harder he swats at those things. There's not really a story to it, he just rings them when he needs to go. He's totally outside trained, we never used pads. It was hard work, but well worth it.

| Just ordered some bells too for Holly. She is being outside trained with about 90 % success so far--the rain puts our sccess rate down. She scrapes at the door--hoping she will like the bells and my son will hear them!

| Erin, Was it hard work training Loki to use the bells, or just to only go outside? Thanks, Julie |

| I'm really thinking I would like to try the bells. I'd really like to hear how they work for you after you try them awhile! Thanks, Julie |

| I will post after I get them and let you know how it goes. I only ordered them yesterday--it takes about 12 days to get them, then add another week or to to try! I would be interested in others experiences too. My Holly loves to play with dangling cat toys,so it shouldn't be too hard to interest her in the bells. The ones I ordered from Poochiebells are lovely and not too expensive at $14.95. I got the ones with musical notes! lol

| Bells Hi Nikki, My understanding of the bells is this - the bells are hung on the door that leads to the outside. The pup is trained to ring the bells to indicate a need to go outside to potty. I just did a search on "bells" and there are several other threads that talk about training with bells. I think it sounds like a great idea and I am definitely going to try it when I get "Lily" - in 12 days!!! YAY!!!! Julie |

| LOL - we successfully trained ours to ring the bells when they needed to go outside to potty. Unfortunately, they LOVE going outside, and we don't have a fenced yard to let them run around by themselves in, so we have to go with them each time. They were ringing that thing every two minutes! We'd go out, play a while, come back in, and they were ringing it again in two minutes. We eventually took the bells away and went to using piddle pads indoors. Now going outside is a special treat.

ghhow to use them in a couple days. Our final housetraining problem was that he would scratch or sit by the door and no one heard him. Before the bells I had to watch him every minute, follow him when he went downstairs, and he spent a lot more time in his crate. Once he figured out bells mean someone coming to let him out, he was totally reliable. He went from 1 accident a week (from about 8 months-1 yr old) to none. Housetraining was a lot of work just because Yorkies are small, so he had to pee a LOT. We crate trained and that helped, but we'd let him out more thinking he was ready and then he'd have an accident, usually our fault for not watching him. We went through a lot of UTIs and some other medical issues too. Anyway, even with all that he's totally housetrained. We crate him when we're not home, but when we're home he swats at his bells and we let him out! He is telling the truth most of the time too, not just ringing them to go play. Sometimes he will ring them if the neighbor dog is out or my husband is taking out the trash, but if I let him out he will actually pee and then go investigate, but he can't get far on a leash so he just comes back in. He's a good boy

| I got bells a week or so ago. And, I'm already trained. I ring them everytime I go out. Time will tell if my pups catch on to this. They know what "right the bells" means. They run to the door when I say this --- and wait for me to ring the bells and take them outside. Carol Jean |

| Well, I've tried the bells the last couple days and had to remove them from the door. Zoie was playing with them like a cat would!! She wouldn't leave them alone and I can't watch TV listening to that so I took them down. She barked at them and everything. Shoot, she barks at the child gates too. She can't stand anything new. Just like my 5 year old! LOL I think they are a great idea if the dog isn't crazy like Zoie. :-) |

| we bell trained from the time chance was 14 weeks. Works well for us. Rarely there are accidents. Our older yorkie is catching on and he rings them every once in a while. yes and I can tell by the ring when Chance really has to go cuz he will hit them hard. If you just wants to go play you get a soft ring. |
