| Totally frustrated with housetraing..... Hi all. I am a new memeber. This is my first post. I have a two year old nuetered male named levi. He does great in his crate for 6 hours while I am at work. I come home, take him out on his leash, pee and poo...crate is clean, all is well. But, when he is free around the house he will go to the door when he has to go and I let him out on his run. But usually a few times a week, he will pee in the house. For no real reason meaning he may have just come in, or have only been in for a while. He is strictly trained for outside. No pee pads, no litter box. Just his crate while I am at work. I don't get it. He knows what he is suppose to do...but. also, if I catch him and yell at him he will pee cause he is nervous. I even had his urine checked...but everything was fine.I am pretty much at the end of my rope. I have another dog, old shnauzer female that was trained in 10 days...and rarely makes a mistake. What should I do? He is ruining my rug. I am going to wear it out from shampooing it. Thanks p.s otherwise he is a big lovebug! |

| Give Levi some time, he can be trained! Be patient, he probably does not like the yelling, a stern "No!" in your sternest voice may be sufficient to teach him that peeing inside is wrong. Treats can also work very well for house training. Does Levi get alog with the schnauzer? Because if both are alpha dogs, Levi may be marking "his" territory... |

| My pup (9 months old) often wears a belly band - But summer is here and I take him outside every two hours or so - and he almost never pee's in the house. If I didn't -- he just pee wherever he wants. We gave up on potty pads a lot time ago. He just tears them apart - and never pees on them. Good luck! Carol Jean |

| Training I feel your pain. I have a 1 year old little girl. She too knows she is suppose to go outside, but she pees in the house a few times a week. I think we are well trained taking her out often. I dont' think she is trained. If a puppy pad is down, she will use it. But if it's not, she doesn't go to the door or anying, she just squats. I too am at the end of my rope with her. I don't know what else to do. HELP!!!!!!!

| not all dogs take to houstraining right away . . . and it can be really frustrating for those who really take a long time . . . in the meantime, you get angry and upset as you see your floor/furniture slowly get destroyed by stains or smell . . . my suggestion is to just get panties (for girls) and belly bands (for boys) then everyone is happy . . . |

| Belly Band? I'm a newbie! What is a belly band? I guess I'll have to go to the pet store and check this out! I have a 5 month old male who is driving me crazy! He is taken outside every hour and he gets rewarded and told "good boy" with great enthusiasm when he goes potty outside. But, if we're not watching, he'll pee in the house. He does pee by the door quite often, but he won't bark to be let out. He just goes to the door and squats. We have a large dog run/kennel in the backyard, and he knows he's supposed to go potty in it and he does. When he's done, he'll bark to be let in the house. But, he won't bark to be let out! Help! | Poochie Bells Maybe try using the bells - you can order them at www.poochie-pets.net Attach them to the door and ring them each time you put the dog out. Eventually they will learn to shake them when they want to go out. I've always used treats for Jaxon when he pees or poops where he should - he seems to understand when he's done it right.

| Belly Band from Tiger's Mom I ordered 2 belly bands from Tiger's mom for little Dylan and they are made really well. Dylan is actually doing really well with housetraining (4 months old tomorrow) but if I want to take him back to bed with me I'll put on his belly band. As you can see from the picture he's not crazy about it but that's because he hasn't had to wear it very much and isn't use to it. I think they are a great idea. I am also trying to teach them how to use the Poochie bells but so far (2nd day) they are all afraid of them. |

| Making progress.... Hi guys, Thanks for all the helpful advice. I did try the belly band...I had one from the local yorkie rescue...and so far Levi only "forgot" two times..That is real good for him. Unlike some of your yorkies he does go to the door and bark if he needs to go out(when it is opened). Mostly due to my Schnauzer "showing" him. But, I may try the bell also. I am feeling much better about this houstraining process..I guess with Yorkies especially males....it may take longer than I had hoped. At least I know I am not alone. p.s. when Levi did "wet" the belly band I did show him and tell him he was a bad boy and he seemed to understand......I hope. |

You said when you yell at him, he pees. This is called submissive urination. Yelling at him will make it worse. If you catch him in the act you may startle him, not yell at him (clap your hands or something) and carry him to the appropriate spot, then praise him when he finishes. Submissive peeing is the dog saying you are in charge. It's a sign of respect OR they will do it to get you to stop yelling at them (like, OK I submit, you're in charge now stop it). Try reading a few training books by Pat Miller, Patricia McConnell, Jean Donaldson or Ian Dunbar. If you want a more specific recommendation, let me know. Just check out Amazon, they have all written several books.

| potty training Hi i'm a new Yorkie mom and new to this forum. (I know i'm suposed to post a photo of "Scrappy" and some info on him and/or myself, but currently having trouble with figuring out how to resize my photos on my computer, sorry) These are really great ideas on housetraining. Suposedly he was housetrained via previous owner but he's peeing constantly on the floors (luckly wood, and luckly I catch it shortly after being done). He constantly goes outdoors in the back yard (about every 30 minutes or so). But maybe he'll catch on if I reward him with treats when peeing outdoors. I dont scold him for accidents inside as It would seem to me he might not understand what it was for. But the bell thing i've read about on this forum, i'm gonna also try this. |
