| Breaking the habit of going on the training pad Good evening everyone~ TGIF. My Belle is about 5 mons old now and has been trained to go on the pad, although sometimes she has a tendency to forget and pee in the corner instead. When I'm at work, I leave her in a play yard in the living room with a training pad in the corner. She's pretty good with peeing and pooping on the pad. Lately she has been holding her poop in and waiting until after I walk her when I get home. Except she doesn't go outside, she waits to come back in and then she poops. She has yet to relieve herself outside, always waiting until we're in. What can I do to start getting her to go outside? |

| That's an interesting problem. Personally I'd love to have that problem, I'm still trying to get Ollie to use the pads consistently. but I can understand your dilemma. Have you tried taking the pad outside with you? If that works, then maybe try making the pad smaller ad smaller until it is just a tiny piece. |

| Take the poop and put it outside. Act like she did it and praise her. She never learned that it's OK to go outside. Also, take her on a longer walk. At a certain point, they cannot hold it. She'll have to go. Good luck!

| I second Jeanie's suggestion to take some poop & pee outside. Let her smell it when you take her out. Dogs often stimulate themselves to defecate by smelling poop. When she does go outside, throw a party! Lots of treats and praise. Be aware, though, that once you've trained her to go outside, she may refuse to go back to pads.

| Yet once again I am glad I am not the only one. While I am ok with Diezel going on the pad inside I would like him to go if we are outside also. I am going to be fencing in my terrace and will get this platform that I saw with a patch of grass so I would like to give him the option of going inside or out. Or is that not a good idea. Right now he has no interest in going outside #1 or #2. Today we walked for about an hour and nothing.. but went straight to the pad when we got home. Maybe I will try the pad outside also... |

| You'll all scream about this one - probably - but, my sister finally started using those little wax suppositories in her lab. (He was big - but only a 3 or 4-month old pup). Then she would take him outside for a while. The suppository would stimulate him and he starting going to the bathroom outside regularly....and he learned quickly that that was a wonderful thing to do. She used the suppositories that pediatricians recommend for little babies....and she used one every morning for only a week or so....for sure, not more than that. Whatever - don't blame me - I'm just sharing my sister's success. Carol Jean |
