Hi! I am getting a new pup on may 3rd and I am really excited but i don't know when to stop with his potty pad training and start him on crate training. His breeder has him going on a potty pad right now and I am going to be taking classes over the summer so i won't be home for around two hours at a time. Let me know what all of u suggest. Right now i am going to keep him in my bathroom with a babygate and a potty pad in with him. Then while i am home i'll take him out for a little bit and reward him with a treat. I will start all this RIGHT when i get him. What do all of you think? good/bad? let me know

I think if he is already trained to the pee pad, I would just keep it that way. If you want him to go outside, just start inching the pad towards the door. An inch at a time. but when you are gone you can either leave him in the bathroom with the pee pad or crate him. H'd probably be much happier in the bathroom.

Totally agree!! Mine use both the outside and pottypads when we are gone and at night.

I think if you want to have a dog trained to go outside, you need to start that from the beginning. If you are going to crate train - why not do this anyway? How old will your pup be when you get him? If he will be 12 weeks, that means he will be about 16 weeks by the time you will be at classes? I think 2 hours in a crate for a 4 month old puppy is not unreasonable. 4 is too long but I think 2 is OK if there is lots of play time before and after. Everyone needs to go grocery shopping or do something where the puppy can't go with! We always just kept our trips short. We never did potty pads, and Loki is 100% outside trained. IMO you need to make the decision soon or you are setting your puppy up for confusion.

IMO, i wouldn't put him in the bathroom, that's the dirtiest place with all the germs on the floor. Dogs and puppies love to lick everything.

For both Bambi and Man-Tou, I placed each of them in a exercise pen and paper trained them. they're both 100% paper trained. Bambi treats any wee pad like his personal bathroom, even when we're out, when i take out a wee pad, he just goes on there and pee.

i totally agree with bambis mommy. my vet said the bathroom is the worst place to place a puppy or dog. the best place is the kitchen where it is always clean. i was lucky that kirby was paper trained and when i got him home, it took only two weeks to get him outdoor trained.

Am curious? How is it the dirtiest? How different is the germs on the bathroom floor as compared to any other floors in the house? Do you not keep it as clean as your kitchen?

i think it's more likely that u can find bacterias such as E. Coli in your bathroom than any other place in your house.

I wouldn't put the puppy in the bathroom. When I would leave for lengths of time, I felt bad leaving Emmy in the crate so I would put her in the bathroom with the babygate. One day I came home and I guess she had gotten into something and she got sick.
I am a college student and have a pretty busy schedule. My advice is to start crate training right away. At first, the puppy will whine and cry, but after a weeks time she'll get used to it and be fine. Emmy has no problem being in her crate for 3-4 hours at a time and is 4 1/2 months old. It has REALLY helped with potty training too. From day one I started bringing her outside, and shes 99.9% trained.

per my vet, the bathroom carries more germs that are harmful to your pet than the kitchen.

That’s good to know. I keep Ginger in a bathroom, here at work, for up to 9 hours a day (with walks and breaks too of course). I’ll be more adamant about cleaning it for her, now that I know she could get sick.

I dont crate train, but IM home all day. I think it will be best to start him on the crate as soon as you get him, since you are planning to crate train anyway. Good luck. Please post pics of your furbaby when he you get him.

As many have said before, I think that you should decide NOW to either paper train or crate train and do that from the very beginning!!!!! We crate-trained Hobbs, and although it was tough at first, it has been the best decision. He loves his crate now. We can put him in the crate to travel, take him to a friend's house, have company over, etc. Start out right when you get him by putting him in the crate for a hour at a time. By the time you start school, he will definately be able to stay in there for at least 2 hours!! There are many many websites on crate training. Try doing an Internet search if you are interested in crate training.

OR, if you decide to paper train, just block the puppy off in a bathroom/kitchen/hallway/wherever, put a wee wee pad down, and he can stay in there for hours at a time!! Whatever works best for your lifestyle, but don't switch up potty training techniques on the little guy! He/She will get confused!
