| doggie door I posted yesterday but did not put the right title on as I am new at this so those that did reply, please understand. We have 2 cockapoos that use a doggie door that leads into our big fenced in yard (chain link). They love that freedom. It is so cool to see them be able to come and go as they please. My neighbors say that when we are gone, they see the dogs playing outside quite a bit. We just added a 10 week old Yorkie to our family of 4. She is named Lucinda Williams (after the great singer-songwriter). We call her Cinda. When she get about 5 pounds, we want to put in a doggie door that she can open. We want to know if those of use that use one with success have the kind that are triggered by a special collar or does the dog push it open? Please advise. Love this sight. Thank you! |

| We have one that they push open. It leads into a dog run...that is fenced and has a concrete bottom where they can not dig out. We also have a privacy fence around our yard. Our puppies are only 13 weeks...so they aren't quite use to it yet...and my little girl isn't big enought to push through yet. But, we just want them to get the idea and not be afraid of it. They only use it when I am there so far. I won't let them have full access until their are their adult weights.

| Here is how we trained our cockapoo puppy to use the dog door. We used a thumbtack and tacked up the actually flap to the wall. We then tacked on a very thin piece of plastic. We would help her go through that. Of course being curious she would start pushing on it herself, especially to get back in. She saw it as a game. Once she mastered that, we let down the actual flap and she tried that and bingo! she had it!. Lucinda already tries to push her way out the dog door for the cockapoos. It is really cute when we open the flap for her, she likes to jump in and out the door, going back and forth several times. Of course, we praise her and it's a game for all of us. She definately wants to follow the cockapoos in and out of it. Two times she has managed to run out with them when they were going out....I should say that she squeezed her way out beside them. Too smart! It is too havy of a door for her now. Our cockapoos were about 8 pounds when we trained them to use it and now the largest one, Marley, is 30 pounds and the smallest one, Rosie, 18.pounds. FYI: Marley has been diagnosed with Cushings disease so his life is going to be shortened and we are heartbroken. He is on medication to control the symptoms. Now back to our sweet baby Yorkie, Lucinda. She is 10 weeks and weighs 3 pounds. For her, we will install the cat size door. Actually we are going to do it this weekend and let her start to play around and with it. I can't imagine how boring our dogs life would be without their door. When we are at work, they have the option of going out and having a ball in the yard, which our neighbors tell us they do all the time. Hope this helps! |
