| I'm going crazy...any suggestions? I have a 22 week yorkie female named Trixie Firecracker. I have had her since January 2nd and she is not yet potty trained. I'm about to go crazy, because I feel like I have tried everything. She sleeps in her crate at night (which she hasn't had any accidents in) and during the day I either keep her in her playpen or I let her out when she can be supervised. At first she was going on the newspapers in her playpen, but then she just started shredding them. Then I did the outside thing, she will only pee outside. She won't poop though, she'll wait until I bring her back inside to poop. Also I never know when she's gotta poop, sometimes she goes right away and other times it can take her 12 hours to poop. I recently just got the doggie litter box to try and well that was a flop. She won't go to the bathroom in it....she sleeps in it!!! I found her sprawled out on her back with her legs up sleeping. I feel like a failure because I can't get her potty trained. My family and friends just laugh at me. Anyone have any suggestions? |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | It just takes time and patience. Are you using rewards when she goes where she is suppossed to? Some are harder to train than others. Hopefully someone on here with more experience can help you with this.

| I am not the best one to give potty training advise but I just kept taking my dogs outside like every half hour and they started going outside. You nbcould also try pad training you have to do the same thing keep putting them on the pad. I didnt have any success with it but others do. Good luck consistency is the key.

| I've been having alot of potty problems w/my now 13 week old. After posting a few threads, I've received some helpful hints that seem to be helping. Four days ago (after being super frustrated w/accidents!!!) I got rid of the puppy pads and litter box. I began taking her outside (right away in the morning), she'll automatically poop and pee (having not gone all night). I bring her in to eat/drink and play a little (about 20 mins), take her back out and she pees again. I bring her in and crate her for 20 mins. If she's quiet I take her back outside (she'll usually poo/pee) again and then I bring her in for some play time. After some rambunctious play time (usually an hr or so) I take her back outside to pee (praise and reward lavishly each time she goes) and then bring her in and crate her (w/treats) for a while so I can shower/get dressed or whatever. Immediately upon getting her out of the crate, I take her out (she may or may not go), if she doesn't go, I re-crate her and then try again later. This seems to be working really well and we've only had two accidents (my fault) since we started this 4 days ago. I'm fortunate to be home all day right now to train so it helps. Sorry for the lengthy response, but I was so frustrated a few days ago, and this method seems to be working. Hope you find a method that works for you! |

The rest of the method that Cheska's Bella has described is excellent too. You can expect a fully house broken yorkie within 2-3 months using this method. It will be constant vigilance for that period of the time, but after that, you and yorkie will enjoy the freedom of never having to watch its every move and allowing him/her free range of the house for the rest of you and your yorkies life! Remember, this includes rain, snow or shine. But to me it's well worth the effort to never have to worry about this aspect of your dogs life again!! I know that I enjoy Millie so much more. (There is no underlying anxiety in our relationship. Because I never have to pick up poo or clean pee in the house every day and wonder if this is our life together for the next 15 years.)

It's kind of good that in that sort of extreme situation, she'll use the litter box, but I definitely will not use it as part of her daily routine! It's amazing what a difference outside training has made.

BTW, I take Trixie out no matter what type of weather it is. If she has to go, she'll go really quickly and we run back inside.

| Question: Until what age is it that their tummy's can hold it longer? Maddy is 5 months and Gizmo is 8 months and it seems now that they only go at about between 7am-8am and sometime around 3pm and then again around 8 pm and then maybe about 9-10pm? |

| I really don't understand some of you impatient people. These are little dogs, just like human babies they take time to train. I have heard that they don't really even have any control over their bladders until about 3 -4 mos. Yes you take them outside and teach them this is where they pee but good luck! You have to take them outside regularly every hour or so until they start realizing this is where they go. I live in North Dakota so don't give me that too cold stuff. Animals adapt. Yes, winter is not the best time to bring home a puppy, I have done that and it is very cold standing out there with them until they start to 'get it'. We now have a pet door and they can go out whenever...that is a great investment. However you must have a totally fenced, safe place for that too. Even with all of this, there are STILL accidents in the house. I would never spank or yell at them for it. I will however show it to them, in stern voice say we do this 'outside' and then take them out. When you are too harsh all you are doing is telling them they need to be afraid of the wild woman! |

| I agree with Butterfly. However, you also need to be consistent or she will never catch on. She is 22 weeks old, so about 5 months old right? And you have tried newspaper, then outside, and THEN a litterbox? How on earth is the poor dog supposed to know where to go??? Pick one and make a committment. In my opinion, outside is the easiest for the dog. Try crate training (skip the playpen) and stop confusing her. Get some yummy treats and start outside training. She's young enough to catch on quickly. Good luck.
