| Daytime crate guilt Hi all, I'm the new owner of an 8 week old Yorkie. She's doing beautifully in her crate at night. My concern is how to crate her during the daytime without feeling guilty I work part time but I'm off this week, getting our new puppy adjusted and happy in our home. The few times I've left her home alone were when I took the kids to school. At that time, I left her in the powder room with a gate up and puppy pads down. I want to get her accustomed to being in the crate while I'm here, but I can't get past the yelping. I feel so bad for doing it BUT I know w/o a doubt that she will be happier in the long run for being adjusted to her crate. Any tips on how to accomplish it? Do I crate her and leave the room, letting her hear me wander around and do housework and stuff? Or will it make it tougher on her, to know that I'm around but unattentive? TO this point, I've been at her beck & call, playing with her when she's not asleep and following her everywhere when she's awake. |

| I purchased a play pen at a garage sale and keep my puppy in that while i'm doing things around the house and can't watch her all the time. I leave it set up in the livingroom and she doesn't seem to cry that much i did have to say in the beginning several time NO. I also put things for her to play with in there. But i don't leave the same toys in there all the time she gets bored with them. Just like having a baby.... Like you i feel guilt because of a crate being so small and not having room to move around. While i'm gone to work i use the laundry room with the gate. |

| When you're at home you could leave the crate unlocked and open for her to walk in and out of when she pleases. That way she will get use to the crate, and when it's time to actually put her in there she will be more use to it. I put Cordelia's crate in a pen area. That way she can go in and out when she wants but she is still closed up to where she will be safe and not wondering into things. I bought this at Petco.http://www.petco.com/assets/product_...610708665B.jpg

| I feel your pain, pinkmartini! I was thinking about posting something about this myself. My Frankie goes with my husband to work, but is left in his crate most of the time, and let out every couple of hours for playtime and potty breaks. But I still feel really bad. He's home with me on the weekends, and when I can't keep an eye on him, I put him in his crate, too. I read that if they're allowed to roam, or if they're in a large area, it will be harder to potty train them (?). Do you all let your babies roam around the house? Has this worked out okay? |
