| When can I leave my yorkie home alone? My boyfriend and I have successfully crate trained Benji! He loves going into his house and never wimpers or barks when he is inside. We make sure that when we come home we take our time putting our coats away and do not praise him when we open the crate so that he doesn't feel like he is being liberated. It has been working really well. However, I am going to be working full-time soon and really want Benji to be able to have free reign of our apartment. How do you go about doing this? How do I train him to make sure that he doesn't chew on things he shouldn't and he still pees on the pad? I am just not sure how to incrementally introduce him to this and how old should he be before we try leaving him alone at home? Thanks guys! |

| I personally would never give Daisy free run of the house for long periods unless I was home.. I use an xpen.. There is enough room for her to play with toys, have food, water, her bed and pee pads... That way there is nothing that she can get into to get hurt and get me upset with her when I get home. That's JMO.. |

| We have left Benji alone in his pen but we always come home to ripped pee pads and tipped over dishes. I always make sure he has toys and things to do so that he keeps himself occupied but we always come home to a mess. That is why I thought he may need a little more room. Thanks for the help. |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | I usually wait until I am sure that the puppy won't chew anything. I have left my past puppies free run when they were about 9=10 months old. It really depends on the dog.

| Gucci is almost 2 yrs old (July), and I only let her run free when Im home. When noone is home I keep her in my bedroom with her bowls of water and food, toys, her bed and pee pad. When I come back home she is sleeping on my bed, . Is not that I dont trust her, but I think is best for her. Some people crate all day, even thou I dont really like that it might work for you. Good luck. |

| You may end up not ever wanting him to have free run of the house. But, if you want to try it - you should try it for shorter periods of time before you go to work full time. This way you'll have a better idea about how he's going to do (and what he's going to do!!!). You might try confining him to a larger area. I think I'll probably always confine my Yorkie to the kitchen when I'm gone. This is where he uses his puppy pad (the washroom off the kitchen) - and he certainly isn't very well potty trained elsewhere in the house. AND - I can't leave a bellyband on him for hours while I'm gone. It would be soaked, and he'd probably get a rash before long. Good luck! It's never easy - is it? Carol Jean |

| I feel it is safer to confine them to an area and not let them have the run of the house. In the event of emergency, they can be found easier and they can get into less trouble. Many babies have been severely injured by chewing thru cords or getting caught on something. I do agree that you can try letting your baby hae run of the place for maybe a couple of hours and see how that works and then add more time. Maybe a nanny-cam could help you watch him and make the decision.. |

| Thank you for all your help. I believe we will not let him have the run of the house. Crating has worked really well so we are lucky. |

| May I Suggest... Gating off a bathroom, laundry room or kitchen. They have a little more room.

I Love Thor Donating Member | I would wait until he hasn't chewed anything up for a while. I have a boy who will be one next month but started chewing everything again. If your guy is chewing, I don't think you can 'teach' them not to chew, you can not encourage it with bad tasting spray, but I think you have to wait for it to blow over. Hopefully it will pass soon and he can be trusted with the run of the house. |

| Loki stays in his crate when we are not home. He is almost a year and a half. He is extremely well trained and well behaved, but the crate is safest. I worry that he will hurt himself if he is out when we are not home. He is only allowed certain indestructable chew toys in his crate, and he has destroyable toys when he is out. There are electrical cords. There are garbage cans. Plus, if he rings his bells to go out and no one hears him, that ruins his bell training. He is not left for long periods of time, even if he could be. We were gone for 6 hours yesterday and I had a friend let him out. He sleeps in his crate, which is probably all he would do if he were out, so he might as well do it in his crate. I'm not trying to convince you, but I thought it might make you feel better about your current situation.

| we keep Maddie in a pretty roomie pen with bed, food/water, wee wee pads and tons of toys- she is FINE there- i wouldnt suggest leaving Benji alone all day in teh house- they can get the littlest thing and it could cause a BIG problem- it amazes me what they get into when you are THERE

| Well..... My chihuahua has free reign of my apartment. Better yet....HIS apartment, lol. However, when we come to visit my parents at their house and there's no one home, we do put him in his "big cage" with my sister's pitbull. I know....before anyone gets any ideas and starts yelling at me, my chihuahua and the pitbull have been raised together since they were puppies. Bubbles would NEVER hurt my Luca. Bubbles will actually cry if I try to take Luca upstairs and leave her alone. Luca is her baby, and does treat him that way. Now....with Adrianna....I do plan keeping her in an ex-pen when I'm not home at my apartment. Also, when I do come to visit my parents, I'll definitely bring the pen with me as well. I'm attaching a picture of my chihuahua and my sister's pitbull all cuddled up together!

| Gucci will be 2 yrs in June, she is now able to stay upstairs in my living room and kitchen area. I gate the stairs going up to the bedrooms. She does not chew on furniture anymore. She lays on a chair that I have, I keep a soft blanket on the chair and she is able to look outside the window during the day. I work but I am able to come home to check on her and my son 's school hrs. vary so someone is always around. On weekends if I am gone a few hrs. she just lays on the chair and sleeps. I think she is pretty safe. At night I put her in her crate in my laundry room and I gate her in , she has her own room...lol |
