| Is it ok to ignore his signal to go out? He is 6 months old and he only started to let me know when he needs to go out about a month ago. He goes and stands by the door. He isn't very persistent though if I don't see him he will pee in the house. The problem is he loves to be outside and he is driving me crazy constantly going to the door. It doesn't matter how many walks or how much time we spend outside he always wants to go out. He even sits in the window like a cat. If I am positive he doesn't need to go out, only wants to go out, is it ok to ignore him. I don't want him to stop going to the door altogether but I can only take him out so many times a day. Thanks for any advice.

| Pee-Boy!! Get him a "Buddy Band". He is marking his territory, not peeing every time. Male pups just love to pee on anything vertical! I recommend you crate train him and keep a buddy band on him. Only take it off when You want to take him potty. He does not need to go more than 4-6 times per day.. probably even less if you crate him and control his water and food supply to 3-4 times per day and only take him out 30 minutes to one hour after eating, after any naps, and after any long duration in his crate. They also have to pee after excessive playing. I hope that helps.. |

| i would say stick to a schedule, but that is just me....... my parents dogs go outside, but sometimes she just leaves the door open for them to wander in and out, if it is too cold then they will wait at teh door to be left out. . . The big thing though is to know when youre baby needs to go adn when he doesnt... if he doesnt need to go, i guess you could ignore him, but maybe a better way would be to distract him |

| Water... Quote:
Our trainers have stressed to us, though , that you should not leave the water out all day for them, just as we don't drink constantly. Also, this establishes your "power" as their master, so that they know you are in control; you control the food and water supply. It is not to keep them thirsty, just to control their bathroom problem. It also establishes a potty schedule; if they know they'll get water at 8 am, 12 pm, 4 pm, and 8pm, they will drink a lot more when they get it, because they know how long it will be until their next water break. This is not torture! However, if you feel you cannot do this to your pup, then I hope you have another way to control his potty breaks. Either he will control you with his potty schedule (ie; at his leaisure), or you control him and he will do it on your time. This sounds stern, but my trainers have assured me. In fact, they cut off water to the dogs water 3 hours before bed-time, and food 5 hours before! They said dog's bodies aren't like ours, they don't need the food and water as often as we do (humans should eat every 3-4 hours max). If a pup should drink 2 cups of water per day, it doesn't matter if he does it all day long or only 3-4 times per day; he'll get all of his water! Don't worry, I am very kind to my dogs! | |

| i dont doubt youre kindness to your dogs, ive just never heard of this before, i was a little shocked...... i do leave water out all the time, and i make sure it is in ample supply, and he doesnt control me at all because i am using the pee pad method, he can just go when he wants to.... I do have his water bottle attached to his crate (like the hamster water bottles ) and i guess maybe he is smart enough to not drink the water when he is in there because he NEVER goes in his crate. I think the most we have left him in there was 9 hours or so while both my fiance and i were at work. I have really never heard of this before, i understand the idea of why someone would want to, but in all my years of dog ownership and visiting with other people with dogs i have never seen ANYONE use this method. But, hey, if it works why change then right? My main point was that the pup in question is 6 months old and should be able to hold it. Maybe putting him on a potty schedule. . . . . again, i trained toby with pee pads so i dont have to walk down the stair every two seconds, and i realize not everyone lives in a place where they can just leave the door open, especially with little dogs |

| Archie gets taken out three times a day and I try to do it on a schedule...he knows when he gets to go out. However, like this morning, I woke up late. He was on the bed trying to wake me to tell me he had to go out. So I got up and while getting ready to take him out, he went into the bathroom and went to the bathroom. I still took him out though so that he knows that the rules have not changed. I know when he has to go because he starts sniffing around and acting hyper, and he tries to nudge me with this nose. When he stands by the door or the window, it doesn't necessarily mean he has to go to the bathroom. To me, it just means he wants to go out and I ignore him sometimes. As for food and water, I always leave it out for him because I never know when he wants to eat. Usually it's after playing but it doesn't affect him going to the bathroom. He'll pee on his wee wee pad if it's an emergency. |

| Hi: I think that the thing to remember is that Yorkies are small dogs, therefore, there bladders are very small. When you think about it it makes sense. If a yorkie is urinating alot, he probably has too much water in his bladder. His little body will absorb what it needs and just dump the rest! I offer my comet a full bowl of water twice a day, during his feeding times only. i agree with the trainers. It works for us. Good Luck, Cometsmom |
