| Seperation anxiety? Hi everyone! So I recently adopted a 4 year old yorkie russell named Dash. It's been exactly two weeks since I got him. I live in an apartment and had my doubts over how well he'd adjust. He's been doing pretty well settling in so far, but I'm beginning to think he either has separation anxiety or is afraid of closed spaces. Here's what I'm noticing 1. From the day I got him home, his favorite spots are the couch in the living room and my bed in my bedroom. He heads for these spots the first time he comes in. 2. He will not sit still in a room if either me or my roommate is not with him. If i enter my bedroom and close the door, he'll rush to the door and start clawing it and whine till i let him in. If I let him in, and go out myself, he'll do the same thing till I let him out. 3. Crate training isn't going well. He won't get into the crate even if I put in treats. I've started putting his food and water in there and he'll only go so far in so he can eat a little food and drink water with his hind legs out of the cage. The cage is big enough for his bed, which he fits in confortably, and his food and water bowls. At times, he won't eat till his food is taken out of the cage and put down outside. 4. On the occasions I have managed to get the cage door shut with him inside, he's perfectly calm as long as I'm in the same room within eyesight of him. The moment I'm out of eyesight, he'll begin to whine. The reason I'm crate training him is because he won't potty on command even after two weeks of praising him and giving him a treat when he potties. He usually takes at least half an hour of walking before he potties and this can get a little inconveniencing for my morning schedule. The previous owners gave him up because of their young kids. He didn't do well with them and maybe I'm thinking he was left alone in a crate or in a room away from people because of the kids and that's where his anxiety is coming from. I've just got him used to walking with a harness so I'm pretty sure he had a fenced in yard at his previous place. Well that's it for what I've got to say. Hope you guys can let me know what's going on. Thanks! Irvin |
