| I don't know what to do.....Help!! Hi, I have a 9 week old yorkie puppy. At night she sleeps in her create, she has started crying in the middle of the night, but I didn't go let her out ands she did stop. When I got up this morning, I saw that she had gone to the bathroom in the create . If I take her out at night when she cry's will she always want to go out in the middle of the night. I don't want to be getting up during the middle of the night everynight to take her to the potty. Also if I do take her out should I let her play for a couple of mins before putting in the create or should I just put her right back in the create? I am not really sure what I should do. Please help!!!!!!!!! Crystal |

| 9 week-old can't hold it thru the night yet She is only 9 weeks old and certainly can NOT hold it thru the night. If you don't let her go potty she would definitely have accident in the create. Sorry, there is no way around it. When I first got my puppy (at age of 12 weeks), I got up every two to three hours thru the night to let her go puppy. However, she doesn't always wants to go as planned. She would cry for potty break in the middle of the night but I can never get to her in time (she sleeps in our master bath then). I ended up has to give her a bath in the middle of the night - that's no fun for either of us. So, I fence off an area for her and left the door of her carrier (where she sleep) open during the night. She would just go in her litterbox on her own whenever she needs to go. I still got up every few hours to clean up her litterbox because she won't use it again if it's been soiled. She is 7 months old now so she can hold it thru the night and we all sleep a lot better now. One way or another, your baby needs potty breaks in the middle of the night for now. I am sure you would figure out what works best for you. You can also do a search here to see how other member handle it at the beginning. Good luck with your little one. |

| Playpen Training When I first bring home a Yorkie I place it in a regular baby playpen whose bottom is wrapped in a vinyl or platic cloth. I put the bed, food and water on one end of the playpen and a pee pad on the other end. That way the puppy can go to the bathroom when it needs to until it is old enough to hold it through the night. I put my playpen in the room with us so the puppy can socialize...they hate to be alone. When they are older you can take them outside to do their business and either confine them with a pee pad or crate them at night. Mine hate crates for some reason. |

| Thanks Thanks everyone for the advice. Lastnight I took her out at 11:00pm and then again at 5:00am and she did not go to the bathroom in her create from 11 to 5. I tried to wake up every 2 hours, but I couldn't wake myself. Does anyone know at what age are they able to hold it through the night? Thanks, Crystal |

| It takes about 6 months... are a little longer for pups to have good control of their bladders..etc. You might try to get an XPen put a peice of Linoleum or Vinyl under it. or a room without carpet and use a baby gate. Put the crate in the area with door off for the pup to sleep in, food, water, toys and pee pads at the other end. You will both be a lot happier and you will not have to get up in the middle of the nite. This is also great to use when you are not at home or busy. It keeps them safe. Just be sure to remove anything around the neck, clothes or harness's so the pup can not get caught on anything an hang itself. This is how I do mine and we are all very happy.. you can work on the potty trainning throught the daytime. good luck to you and hope you get some sleep... Sherry |

| I just got a new yorkie, she is 10 weeks old, we have had her 4 days. She gets up two times a night sleeping anywhere from 4-5 hrs at a time. I take her out put her back in her laundry room and go back to bed. I have a 2 yr old daughter and i can tell you that owning ANY puppy is like having a baby and untill they are older they will continue to get up a few times a night to potty. When you bring a puppy home you have to think of it like a baby, I keep that in mind when my yorkie wakes me up in the middle of the night, I may be tired but she deserves it. |

| She will not always want to get up in the middle of the night. This is a temporary thing and it will cause you to lose a lot of sleep but it's worth it. If you skimp on the housetraining now you will have a difficult time later! Last night Loki woke up and looked around and I asked him if he needed to go outside and he curled up in a tighter ball and went back to sleep :-) It really does get better. The puppy stage is tough, but it's worth it! Also, no playtime at night. Put her straight back in her crate. You can give her a treat for pottying and for going in the crate but then just walk away and go back to bed. They learn quickly that nighttime is not playtime! Also, crate training does work. I know a lot of people on here use the playpen/kitchen/bathroom/baby gate method and that's great for them, but IMO the fastest path to housetraining is crate training. You have to set your dog up for success and minimize accidents. HOWEVER, the last thing you want is for your dog to get used to soiling it's crate. It's cruel to leave them in there longer than they can hold it, so if you're not willing to do that then it is necessary to use another method. Decide what is best for you. Good luck.

| at 9 weeks, bunjee was getting up 2x in the middle of the night in need of potty. they can't be expected to hold it overnight at that age. sometimes he'd cry for attention in the middle of night, not just for potty. so when we get up at night, it's only for potty, not to play. i give him about 3 minutes to go potty. if he doesn't go, then back in the crate he goes. if he does, he gets a treat and then back in the crate he goes. now that he's 18 weeks. he still gets up once in the middle of night to potty. he's okay with his crate, but hates it when the doors are locked. he can only really hold it while in his crate for about 2-3 hrs at a time. puppy period is hard, but it'll be all worth it! |

And yes, she does sometimes step into her little puddles but not very often as she tries very hard not to get herself wet. After she has been holding it for a longtime, she would only “release” part of it at a time. I mean she would go and jump out of the box before she got her feet wet and wait for me to replace the paper. Once that’s done, she would go in again to finish the job and jump out again. When I am done with the second cleaning, she would go in and do the “solid” part and came out for a treat. Occasionally she dose step into her little puddles. For that, I usually placed another piece of newspaper right in front (where she usually exits the box) of her litterbox just in case she needs to “wipe it up”. As I don’t want to soil the carpet her littlebox is placed in the bathroom where the floor can be easily wiped up. I guess I can get a bigger box for her so she has a better chance of making it out nice and clean. I don’t think that would solve the problem completely so I am sticking with the two small size litterboxes we have right now. luvmyorkie if you need any help on litterbox training, pm me and I will be more than happy to help you out.

| W O W Your lil one is really smart. Thanks so much for the insightful info. I'm trying to decide if I want to litter box train or train her to potty outside. For right now, someone said I needed to wait until I get her shots B4 taking her outside. So, I'm just putting newspaper in the restroom until she's current on her shots.

If you do not have a fence-in yard, it's a good idea to wait till 2 weeks after she gets all the shots to go potty outside. That's exactly what I did. Better safe than sorry. But I did make sure that she meets as many people as possible before she got all the shots though. Socializing cannot wait.
