Traveling and Separation Anxiety I'm planning to take my Lulu to New York City with us in 10 days. She's visited before and LOVES the city, the noise, the smells, etc.
My only concern - we do want to see a few shows in the evening and obviously can't bring her with us to those.
Lulu tends to have separation anxiety in general but especially when I leave her in unfamiliar places, and I worry she will bark and annoy the other guests in the hotel. A few minutes of barking "in protest" might be OK but I have no way of knowing if she'll bark for hours.
I do plan to bring her crate, which is a familiar and safe space. This worked when I took her to my mother's home and I was able to leave her in the crate for a few hours and don't think she ever barked. But it look a few days for her to get familiar with the house. And the first few times I left, there were other people in the house who showered her with attention, which I'm sure eased her into a feeling of safety when alone there.
Also, I do plan to have her with me for at least a day once we arrive, so by the time we leave she might be tired out and welcome a break in the crate. I also thought it might help to "practice" having her spend time in the crate this week, during times when we're away, so she gets familiar with the routine of "crate means no one is home so might as well sleep." But I'd love to hear your suggestions. |
