| Won't Potty Outside I have a darling 4 month old Yorkie. He's very playful and happy and most of the time potty's on his piddle pad, but my boyfriend and I really want him to get into the habit of going potty outside on walks. We have tried and have stood outside for at least 25 - 30 min and he just will not go. We know he needs to go because his belly is super full and its about 30 min after he eats. Once we bring him in, he then goes potty right away, and sometimes not on his piddle pad. Whats the best way to start getting him into the habit of going outside? |

| At . 4 months old it's a wait him out sort of thing.......plus tons of praise and a treat. When Buddybear goes outside at 17 months I still tell him he's a good boy in the over excited voice .....but when we go into the back yard I always say when we first go out, go peepee, pody Buddybear. He will get the hang of it, just be consistent.

| Oh goodness dont feel bad. I have a 18 mo old brat that I have had since she was 4 mo and she STILL wont go outside. I have tried everything the books say and all the suggestions from the wonderful people here. I have an area in my LR gated off with a potty pad and holder in it along with a bed and her toys and she has her food and water there. It is maybe a 5 ft wide and 10 ft long area so she has plenty of room. As she has gotten older she has gotten very good about the pad and when she goes she lets me know right away so she can have a hug a good girl and a cheerio !!! LOL And her pad changed. I am ok with this for now, but I think when the weather gets warmer i will try it outside again, she has gotten better about everything as she gets older. So just keep at t. I live in Iowa and we have had it pretty bad so far so it will be a few months before I try it outside again. |

| Potty training, my experience with now 4 passed yorkies that I raised from 8 week old pups, they were 100% pad trained by 5 months old, at 7 months old they were 100% house broken. I have had poodles and mini Schnauzers, house breaking yorkies I found no diff. then the two other breeds. Dogs prefer to potty out doors. Consistency is the key word for house breaking any dog. If fed twice a day, they must be fed every day the same time in the morning and evening, you cannot deviate from feeding time. Every dog is diff. as to after eating how soon they will have to go out, my dog needs to go out 10 minutes after he eats, some dogs 20 minutes some 30 minutes, so this will be a hit and miss until you figure how long it takes after they eat. If it was me, 15 minutes after eating I would take dog out, if you leash walk , walk for 15 minutes. If you have a yard that you choose to let dog use, I would take dog to the yard supervised by you 15 minutes after they eat, keep baby out side for 15 minutes, they like to sniff everything. This is NOT play time for them so no playing, tell pup what you want them to do, pee-pee or poo-poo what ever word you choose is what you tell them to do, and keep repeating the words. After 15 minutes and they has not pottied bring pup back in the house, wait 15 minutes and start all over again. You need to know your dogs clock, once you do be consistent with out time to potty is a MUST. Feed same time every feeding, walk same times every day after eating Even if pup has made in the house before it was out time, walk or go out ANYWAY,this shows the pup what time out side takes place. If you can walk in the afternoon, again it MUST be the same time every day. Schedule and Consistency is a MUST. You CAN house break any dog. Dogs are creatures of habit, they get used to doing things like walks or outside time they have built in alarm clocks lol. Whenever pup does their business make sure you have treats on you when you take pup out , give a treat and praise like crazy, make a big happy fuss.

| Get them interested in looking out doors and watching the birds and squirrels. They will get so excited they can't wait to run outside to pee! Mine are worse than a couple of kids wanting to run in and out
