| Puppy Walking Issues on Leash Hi, My Yorkie puppy is very spirited and strong willed. However, I am having two major problems with her training. The first is she refuses to walk outside the living room. She will not walk outside at all on her leash. Help. any idea. She will not even walk on a leash in the house. Any ideas how to resolve this issue? The second she refuses to eat her own puppy food. I have tried two different brands. She is still very little. Lulu is only 5 months. Jill |

YT 500 Club Member | You will HAVE to get her leashed trained. I started mine the day we picked him up at the breeders. His harness went on @ the breeders the leash when we got home right out onto the grass. Just keep trying several times a day. Put it on, pick her up and sit her down outside. She will get used to it sooner than you think. Keep the leash loose till she starts walking a little. Keep a firm grip on it. Once a little Yorkie starts running there's no way you can catch them, so a leash is most important. She will eat. Maybe try some boiled chicken breast mixed in her kibble. But, make it mostly kibble. Good luck, please keep leash training. It WILL work, but you have to make it work.

| She is still a baby. She will walk on a leash but this is all new to her. Patience with a capital P. She has to get use to it and know you are alpha in the pack. Firm, not aggressive or weak. Read all the posts on here about food........way too many to list. Congratulations on your new baby.

| The first couple of times that I took Max outside on a leash, he sat down and refused to move. Finally I coaxed him off the driveway and we walked around the block. From that day on, he has loved walks. Each new surface required coaxing. He was accustomed to walking on pavement, but then was afraid of sidewalks, grass, or brick walks. Like Lulu, he is a very confident dog in general, but had these quirks. Be confident and patient, as others above advised. Keep your feet facing the direction you want to go. Start to take a step and say, "Let's go!" in a happy voice. Move the leash a little too. You can use toys and treats if she is motivated by those. If you do not have another person to help you, hold the treat or toy ahead of her. Or even throw the treat or toy ahead of her. Usually just being outdoors makes them forget about the leash. Practice daily, even if she doesn't move. The more you expose her to now, the better. Good luck!

| Yorkie & Leash Training Get a harness for your Yorkie first and foremost. Now get a CHAIN leash. One with the smallest links. Cut off the leather handle as you will never use this one for walking anywhere AND she will most likely chew it which is not good for her. Third put her harness on and leave it on. She needs to get used to the feel of it before you go to the next step. Let it be on for about a week - so she walks and runs in it without any problems. (you can take it off at night when sleeping) Fourth. After she is totally relaxed with the harness being on, clip the leash onto the harness and leave it drag on the floor. This will teach her the leash is not something to be afraid of. It will follow her wherever she wants to go. DON'T pick her up to take her someplace MAKE her walk. Keep her food and water bowls in the kitchen. This will make her walk out of the living room to get something to eat and drink. STOP SPOILING HER. She has you right where she wants you -- wrapped around her little paws! Once she is walking around with the chain dragging behind her without any problems switch the chain to her regular walking lead and again allow it to drag. This step MUST be done only when you can watch her. After about an hour, pick up the lead and follow her. THEN you turn and go back in the other direction giving her a treat as she follows you. You will need to do this for about 3 days. Now start taking her out the door and back. She will quickly catch on that the leash going on means spending extra special time with the person(s) she loves most. Reward her every time week one, every other time week 2 and so on, Then only when she comes in from a nice walk. If something frightens her about walking stop and let her investigate the area/object on her terms. NEVER yank or pull - this will only make her put on the skids. Keep the lead loose. This is how my trainers MUST work with a leash shy dog. We raise & train service dogs for physically disabled as well as assist with owner - trained dogs. REMEMBER: Animals understand Tone and Body Language long before understanding our words. Animals do NOT understand our language until after training. |
