| How do you train a yorkie to ring a bell I am missing Maxwell's signal that he wants to go our which is usually just a stare. I have heard about this bell you teach your dog to ring so I bought one and hung it on the door knob. Everytime we go out to potty I say,"ring the bell for potty time". and out we go. I don't think he gets it at all. Help! |

| When you tell him to ring the bell are you showing him how to do it? Maybe if he associates the sound of the bells and then sees that the door opens after the bell rings he will get it. I just hung a bell strip there and Daisy picked up on it without showing her. She does the stare thing too and sometimes she will bark to go out.

| Go to the door. Ask "do you want to go outside?" or whatever you usually say. Then use his paw to ring the bell, give immediate treats and praise lots all while you take him outside. Do this until he catches on. Some it may take a few times, others it may take weeks. The more you practice, the shorter the time, so I would do it even if he is not asking to go outside on his own.

| I trained my yorkie to ring the bells by first spending a couple days holding the bell in front of his nose. Start by touching the bells to his nose, give "ring" command, and rewarding him with a treat. Gradually increase the difficulty level by holding them farther away from him so he will actually have to ring it himself. After a couple days, hang them on the door. I asked mine "got to potty?" every time I took him out, and made him ring the bell first. Reward for ringing and for doing his business outside, but gradually take away the reward for bell ringing so he does not abuse it. It only took him a few days to realize what the bell was for. He now rings it consistently. The only problem we have is if I go to another room for a few minutes, and do not hear the bell, he will have an accident. I have to be really diligent about being in the same room as him or hurrying back. Good luck! |

| Blazer pretty much taught himself how to ring the bell. I had decorated for Christmas and had hung some bells on the door. He had a habit of sitting behind the couch, at the door when he wanted to go out. When I'd ooe the door I would ask, "Do you want to go outside and go potty?" and the bells would ring. Soon enough he would jump up and ring them himself so I'd praise him, ask the same question, and take him out. He got to the point that if our big dog was laying by the door (as he did when he wanted to go out) Blazer would jump up and hit the bells for him. When we go stay at other people's houses I try to remember the bells and make sure to show Blazer where I'm hanging them so he knows which door to go to to get my attention.

| I'm happy to hear most pups will ring the bells. I bought poochie bells for Calleigh and she was afraid of them. She does go to the door when she wants to go out. If I don't see her, she will make a little whining noise. It all worked out for us.
