| Please help save my rugs!!! Hi, I am new here! And I need a little help. I have a 9 month old teacup yorkie who was trained to go potty on the wee wee pad. In the beginning it was hard because when I would keep him gated in one room as soon as I would step over the gate he would go on the floor. I took away the gate and he never missed the pad again. He won that battle. My new issue is after 6 months on always going on the pad I just recently got a couple area rugs in the apartment. How can I get him to stop going on them. Sometimes he goes on the pad ( when he does he is rewarded) ... most times on the rugs. I am afraid that if I try gating him again it is only going to make it worse. He has already made it very clear he is very spiteful when he wants to be. I tried spraying bitter apple and that did not work at all... Any help would be great! |

| I have the same problem you do with some throw rugs. I would honestly suggest getting rid of them!

Yorkie Lover Donating Member | We just don't put down little throw rugs as the girls were having a hard time knowing the differnce in them and their pee pads. The only thing I can suggest is you can buy some pee drops or spray that helps direct them where to go...this may help some!!

| I think my only option will be to get a small rug cleaning machine... Good thing is it is a light shag.. so maybe stains will be hidden. So far today he has been good.. I broke some treats up into small pieces and when he uses the pad he gets a piece. So far it seems to be working... I just thank god he is so tiny... this way everything he does is tiny to.. hehe I can't not have rug here. I have granite floors and it gets way to cold in the winter... I'll figure it out and hope he does too.. but thanks for the suggestions! Last edited by Cherry; 01-15-2006 at 12:44 PM. |

| I had this problem too.... She wouldn't go on the living room rugs, but the kitchen rugs were a huge issue. I ended up just taking them away for a while until she knew EXACTLY where her pad was and where she was supposed to go. After a while - about a month - I put them back one by one (I waited a few days between each one) to make sure we wouldn't have any problems again. Thankfully, she knows the difference now. She can be standing on one of the rugs and run off to her pad to go potty.... |
