| Doesn't like being outdoors alone at night Our 4 1/2 months old likes going outside her doggie door. But at night she barks and as soon as I go out she starts playing and checking. I think she just doesn't like being out in the dark alone! Any y others have this issue? She is good in the day with rare barking! |

| My two will only bark if they hear another dog barking. They seem to be on high alert listening for them though. I never let mine out alone so I'm not sure if they would bark more if I wasn't there with them. Your pup is adorable.

| Gosh.....I am 66 years old, 0ver 200 lbs, and carry a 45, and I dont like going outside in the dark by myself either...... I would NEVER allow a Yorkie to go outside at night, unattended....but then I have LIVED the horror of a tiny Chi being taken by an owl.....that was in 1975....havent done THAT again! Hopefully, you wont loose your little yorkie puppy to the same fate, even tho the probability is probably about at least 80% you will. The fortunate thing is, after you witness the horror and hear the screams of your precious little pup, as it is carried off in the sharp talons of an owl or hawk, and if you are fortunate enough to be able to hear the blood chilling screams of your precious pup being disemboweled alive by the owl or hawk, that is usually enough to break you from ever allowing your precious baby out in the darkness, alone, unsupervised by yourself.....hopefully. It is a horrific scream you will NEVER forget...... Last edited by Yorkiemom1; 08-02-2015 at 10:25 PM. |

I agree, my girls never go out alone. I worry about hawks, owls, coyotes, etc.

| I have a doggie hatch, but, it leads to my deck which is 3 feet off the ground and also has a gate. At night he potties on the deck with me out with him. I live in a heavily wooded area, we have coyotes that could hop my deck in a flash and carry my baby off. Please do not let your baby out day or night alone.

| Hi. We have a well secured back yard and do not have owls or other such critters in the city area. But thank you for the concern. Our last yorkie, Lizzy was almost 5 lbs and lived to be almost 12 years. She too was allow d the freedom and loved thinking the yard was hers! However, if I lived where there were dangers to our Mitzi I would definitely not let her out alone! We all adore her. Thank you for your replies and I am so sorry about what happened to your pet. What a very sad and horrible memory for you. |

| I live "in the city," too, but we have all sorts of critters. I have personally seen skunks, armadillos, possums, bobcats, coyotes, owls, hawks, and eagles. I guess our wildlife doesn't realize where the city limits are. Mine are not allowed out after dark. By the way, according to this website, red tail hawks are abundant in your area, and barn & horned owls are common: Fresno Birds

I would suggest to take your dog out to pee before you go to bed. Then keep the door to your room closed so they cannot go out the doggy door at night. I would not feel comfortable letting my dog go out by themselves at night, even if the dog had a run that was completely fenced off, even with a roof, reason being is there are still tiny predators, like black widows, or what I recently learned, mice or rodents that have eaten poison and wandered into your dog's area and dies. If the dog gets to the poisoned rodent, it will also kill you dog. You won't know till morning.

| I too "live in the city"....a densely populated neighborhood.....no open country around here! I have had owls dive at my babies when they are out in back WITH ME on the other end of a leash!! I have had raccoons, possums, coyotes, bob cats, even a puma in this neighborhood....they had pics in the newspaper of the puma (cougar) that was laying on my 8 foot wooden fence/double secured with a 6 foot chain link fence inside the wooden one, when he made his way several blocks over and started prowling around the golf course....hot summer months, we have snakes, which brings in the hawks to eat the snakes..... we have all kinds of wild animals prowling around this neighborhood at night....middle of a neighborhood, by the way....but hopefully, it will only take you one time to have your yorkie stolen by people wandering the neighborhood looking for "expensive dogs that can be flipped for a profit on Craigs List, or loosing your baby to a wild animal/bird/nasty teenage neighborhood boys....but it does make it easier when we benefit/learn from other peoples misfortune......... |

Forgot all about this!! Following the last flooding we had here, all the rats and mice were driven into the neighborhood from the drainage ditches....they put poison out for the rats, which then ran into back yards all around here, looking for water in ponds, swimming pools, etc and died.....and were then found by several of the neighbors dogs...LARGE dogs....that became ill eating the poisoned rodents! | |

| Our neighborhood backs up into the desert and the Red Rock Conservatory. I think bc there isn't a ton of development here (actually there is a lot, and building more, but there is still much more desert) that most of the predators stay in their natural habitat. I have seen many rabbits, small birds like quails, of course lizards, but haven't seen coyotes. They must be out there to eat the small animals. I'm thinking they have enough food in the desert that they don't need to wander into the neighborhoods. That was the major reason we saw so many coyotes when we were in Orange County, bc there was almost 100% development and no more natural habitats for the predators. Many dogs and cats were taken. We saw coyotes running around even in the day. Owls and hawks too. I always look to the sky when on our walks but have not seen any large predatory birds yet, but I know they exist and I make myself aware. Instead of ignoring the fact or pretending the threat isn't there.

| My back deck is not attached to my house, the deck is also 3 feet off the ground, there is a 3 inch opening between the house and the deck railing, last year 6am, Cody goes out with me behind him, something to the left caught my eye, and Cody's, it was a young possum trying to squeeze through that 3 inch opening, all 3 of us froze looking at each other, then I jumped to grab Cody before he would realize it was a critter and lunge to attack, the possum took off. All day I pictured that cute little possum with it's white striped head, I couldn't get the vision of his frozen shocked little face out of my head. That night I went to throw out the trash, sitting on top of the trash pail cover was the little cute little possum, here is what it's reaction was to me scaring him https://encrypted-tbn2.gstatic.com/i..._tUeEgLE2jKfaC those teeth were long and sharp, my entire attitude changed at that moment, not such a little cute young possum. Had I let Cody out 2 or 3 minutes later this is what he and I would have met. Cody would have lunged for it and he would have been shredded by those teeth. The next day I had a carpenter over to fill that 3 inch gap, but every night before either one of us go out I look through the back door window to make sure no critter is on the deck.
