| Possession or jealousy? Help! So I just adopts a 3 year old Yorkie from a shelter this past Wednesday so I haven't had him for a week yet but I've noticed he bonded very quickly with my mom and I. Maybe because we're the ones who picked him up at the shelter? But I've noticed he gets jealous or is possessive of us. When my brother gets close to my mom he barks and today he nipped him but nothing crazy. Should I wait a little longer to see if he settles down? I should mention that I walk him every day and when I'm at work my mom does it. My brother hasn't spend too much time with him. All the time he spends with him is always with my mom or with me. Could that be a part of the reason? How can I fix this? Or is it too soon to know if he'll stay like this? Should I maybe have my brother start feeding and walking him by himself? Any help would be appreciated guys! Haven't had a dog in a long time! |

| Hi and congratulations on your new little one I'm totally the last one to know the answer to this, lol because I'm having the same issue with my Sunni. I got her when she was about 9 - 10 weeks old, and yet she still acts the way you are describing. She's gotten much better but her possessive jealous streak still rears its ugly head once in a while. I do take her to a weekly training class which has helped get us to the point we are at today. I've been working on giving her treats when she stops growling at my other dog or if she sits nicely while I'm with him or my son for that matter. I dont always have a treat handy, so I do praise her in a very happy excited voice when I catch her being nice. There are others here who will definitely be able to guide you. But its awesome that you saved a beautiful little furbaby!! |

| Welcome to Yorkie Talk and congratulations on the new addition to your family. Sounds like he is guarding your mom and you because you are very important to him. Here is a brief article by trainer Victoria Stilwell. It focuses on food guarding, but there is some good information: https://positively.com/dog-behavior/...urce-guarding/ My younger boy was 8 months old when we brought him home. Although he came from great circumstances, he loved his new home with us and I believe was afraid of being taken away. Instilling confidence and a sense of security helps a lot. Have your brother interact with him in a very patient way. Don't rush things or force things. Positive training and rewards are key. Good luck!

Boy am I glad he doesn't do it with his food but today he did better my brother walked with us and he let him out his harness and leash on. One step at a time I guess but this forum defiantly puts me more at ease. We'll see how he does with my mom this afternoon hopefully he's just as good!

| Sounds like he's being protective and confused if it's a threat or not. He needs to see you interacting more with people to realize it's not a big deal. Don't hold him, just ignore him while you talk to someone and he'll eventually get used to seeing you with other humans. Holding him and showing stress that he might attack will only get him worked up. My dog was the same way with my partner. Also if your dog is socialized with humans and other dogs it'll help. |

This takes time but it took a month before my dog got it. Now he knows how to walk nice on our daily walks and don't bark at people and other dogs. Also, I'm in the situation as you, his previous owners kept him inside the house, didn't potty train. When I got him he didn't even know what grass was. Ha.. but now he's totally potty trained and behaved. Here's a video of a yorkie that's trained to walk nice in this method. For me I still have to give the verbal command sit when I stop, but this dog is so used to it as soon as his trainer stops, he sits. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3vivNcRdaRs Last edited by tphan74; 05-20-2015 at 02:42 PM.
