| Doggie door training Does anyone have any advice on training a yorkie to use a doggie door? I had one installed on my patio door yesterday. My other dog (a pekepoo named Chewbacca aka Chewie) is already a pro at using it and loves it! My ex had one at his house, so I trained Chewie to use it then, which really wasn't hard to do. He picked up on it very quickly. As soon as he saw the new doggie door at my place, he immediately went through it! My yorkie, Griffy, on the other hand isn't really getting it. Griffy is a little skittish in general, and even the sound of Chewie going through the door makes him jump. I've gotten to the point where Griffy will go through the door if I hold it open for him, but it still takes a bit of time and persuasion to get him to do it. Any advice would be extremely helpful! |

| Have you tried holding the door open from the outside and coaxing him to come through using a treat, or his fav. toy? You may have to change the door to something that does not make a noise. I had a special screen door made with a doggie door, it's not really a door, it's heavy gauge clear plastic curtain like, pup just walks through it, they can see through it. You may have to remove what you have and replace with clear plastic, if Griffy is on the skittish side you don't want to ad to it,just something to think about if he refuses to use it willingly.

As for the color of the door, I'm including a picture so you can see exactly what I am working with. Imgur

| Small dogs should not be outside by themselves because they are prey for many aminals, they can get hurt or out of the fence and they can also be stolen.

I understand your concern, but I've put a lot of thought into this and have decided that it is a safe option for my dogs. I use to live in a house with a big backyard and many owl sightings. I absolutely never let my dogs outside alone there and a doggie door was definitely not an option. I would even put Griffy in a crate outside while he ate, just to be on the safe side.

| Ok I see what you are working with. You only have the door a day or so, I would keep up the treat reward, he is Leary of the door, but you are getting him through it, spend a few minutes several times a day with the training, he'll get it. I had a pup that would not enter a room if the door was open 1/2 way, I had another dog that would enter a room if the was opened a crack, she would push it open with her nose lol, but not the little one. When I had the screen door doggie door made I swore my oldest one would not use it, I was amazed when I saw her follow her sister through, thing was, my little one was the oldest of the two, she was 9 y/o weighed 9 lbs, the youngest was 5 y/o weighed 17 lbs, the older one was madly in love with the younger one, she had to be where ever the young one was, she put her fears of closed door aside just to be with her sister, They were inseparable, so getting the older one to go through the doggie door was never a problem. I would continue with the training and reward, some pups take longer then others to train certain things, patience lots of short training sessions with treats and lots of praise, happy dance, clap hands, he will get it. I am sure others will be along to offer their advise and suggestions. Please keep us up dated on Griffy's progress. remember patience is the key word.

| It looks like it is going to be a slow process to get Griffy comfortable with the doggie door. He has only gone through it twice on him own now, well on his own with encouragement. Once was when I had a friend over and he wanted to come back inside because he was so excited to see someone new. The other time was yesterday morning while I was getting ready for work. He started barking at me and then going to the doggie door. He typically never asks to go outside. He usually just looks at the door or stands in front of it. This time I asked him if he wanted to go outside, he got excited. I just tapped the door and told him to go out. He did it after just a few tries! I then rewarded him immediately. He hasn't done the same since, but I feel it's an improvement. I'm just trying not to get him into the habit of me holding the doggie door open for him. He likes to be spoiled. At one point he wouldn't eat unless I was sitting right next to him and encouraging him the entire time. I don't want him to get into that kind of habit with the doggie door. |
