| Am I Doing a Something a Wrong? I've tried searching and didn't find quite what I was looking for so this is my first post. We recently got a yorkie mix. He was born 9/15 so he'll be four months shortly. We also have a yellow lab (female/spayed/11 years old.) Up to this point we've only ever been a "big" dog family. Jasmine, our lab, came home at 14lbs. Tucker, our little mix, was 3.5lbs at the vet last week so I knew going into this training him would be different just based on their sizes. Both my husband and I are home all day (I own my own business and hubby works for me) and with our lab I never pad trained and haven't been using them with Tucker either. I take him outside to potty at one particular spot in the yard, he goes every time and I praise him wildly. We also crate train him and he will hold his pee/poo from 11pm at night until 7/8 in the morning. Overall, I think he's doing super well for being so young and is acclimating to our family wonderfully. He's only had a handful of accidents over the past two weeks but his accidents confuse me. I feel like maybe he should be able to hold his pee longer during the day? (But I'm not really sure since he's our first little dog.) I take him out in the morning, after meals, after naps, after playing, etc. and he goes. We come back in the house and I'll let him have some out of the crate time. I use a baby gate to keep him in the living room with us. He'll romp around for a bit, play with his toy, lay on top of our lab but he'll end up peeing on the floor less than an hour after just going outside. Is this a male dog thing? At four months shouldn't he be able to be out more than an hour without peeing if he can hold it so long when crated? Maybe I'm confused and it's just a learning curve. I fully expect the occasional accident. I just want to make sure there isn't something *I* could be doing on my end other than taking him out every twenty minutes. I feel like doing that is maybe counterintuitive to teaching him to hold it? Maybe I'm just overthinking this! Lol Any input is appreciated! |

| Welcome to YT I think when they're holding it in the crate it's because they're trying not to pee in their bed so when they're out there's not much reason for them to hold it in. When I was potty training Joel, he had a time where he would go anywhere so I kept him with me every second or in his tiny playpen by my side, and just took him outside like crazy. It was annoying at first but I noticed the longer he went without an accident the longer he started to hold it. Hope that helped |

| Welcome to YT, 4 months old small breeds can't hold pee for long period of time due to small bladder. Holding it at night could be 1-like ilovejoel wrote, doesn't want to soil his sleeping area. 2-Also, when they are sleeping, they are not active and drinking water, so can hold it longer. When I had puppies I first trained on paper in doors, at 5 months old they were 100% paper trained with no accidents, then I started the house breaking training. They were fed and walked the same time every morning, then off to work I went, returned home at 4:30 they were walked again. At 7 months old they were 100% house broken. Try taking him out more often, but, it MUST be the same time every day. Consistence and patience are the key words. Even if he does not pee or poo when you take him out, stay with it, same time times every day, he will get it.
