| Not Quiet at Night We are new caretakers for a 4 year old neutered male Yorkie who was a stud in a puppy mill and lived in isolation for most of his life. He is very smart and responds well to most training. We are having a hard time with night times though. He will growl or bark at odd hours and wake us up for attention and a trip outside. We hate to be cruel but we also need our sleep. We put him in the attached garage with the light out after an episode and that helped some. Any ideas? |

| Poor little guy- his previous life sounds horrible. I have a male 7 years old- he is neutered. From my experience with him “ a tired dog is a happy dog”. It may or may not work, but you can start with making sure he has play time or a nice walk prior before going to bed. My Peanut doesn't bark at night, however if he doesn't have a walk or played with before going to bed he will jump on the bed with his toy- dropping it on my face and then barking right in my face to get him to play with me!! Soooo I have to make sure he had exercise prior to sleeping, or we work on our training- which Yorkies love. Do you have him in a crate? You can also try putting him in the room with you, with a blanket over the crate. He may- given his past, want to not be alone and that’s why he is barking.

| He had a hard life you have to be patient. If he has to go potty then you need to take him potty. It's like training a puppy. Putting him alone in another room is just not fair or right after all he has been through. I'm sure after awhile he will get more used to things. When he makes noise take him potty and then just put him in his crate and soon he will learn noise at night just gets him taken for a potty break not play.

| I agree with lovespandap in that exercise is a huge help in may dog issues. If he is tired he will sleep better. It could be that in his previous life he was woken up often by the sounds of so many dogs in close quarters. That sets up an engrained sleep pattern that needs to be overcome. If possible take him for at least two walks throughout the day making sure one of them is about an hour before bedtime. If he gets the exercise he needs he will rest better. Sometimes feeding before bed will help them to sleep better. An empty stomach at night can keep him awake. Yorkies tend to get cold easily. You said you have him sleeping in a garage? He is going to get cold outside. That will surely keep him awake. Yorkies do not have undercoats like most dog breeds and they get cold very easily. Yorkies are not outside dogs. His crate needs to be inside in a warm area and he needs a nice soft bed and a blanket to cuddle up in. I don't think you would sleep will in a garage either. |
