| How do I teach Levi to Lay Down? Hi, All I have been working on training Levi quite a bit over the past few weeks and I would love to teach him the "Lay Down" command next. However, all of the guides on how to teach lay down don't seem to work with Levi. Everything I have read says to get the dog to sit down and then drag the treat from the nose to the floor to get the pup to lay down, but Levi is too short to do that effectively! He just stands up from his sit and never even thinks about laying down! How did you guys teach your Yorkies to lay down? I could use some tips! Thanks.

| Use the treat to get pup into position a few times and treat in the down position. Do this only a few times, maybe two or three then treat with other hand only when pup is in position. I use right hand palm facing, moving it down to horizontal for down hand signal, putting treat between second and third figure tips the first few times. Then start treating with other hand so dog follows signal hand and start randomly alternate between treat, pat or "good pup" Trick is after "sit", "shake", "down" pup will know the training routine better then you and pick up tricks quick. Put pup in down and wave hand with treat between 2nd and 3rd over pup so when she follows she has to roll over, should take 2 or 3 tries to get that started, then random through all tricks to lock them in. Remember, Don't overdo it and stop on a winning note. |

| Its funny, never trained a pup under "House Arrest" before, lol. Ginger gets her final puppy shots tomorrow, then about 2-3 weeks to let the antibodies build up, bad distemper in the area so she's been in house and back yard only. Fun leash training in 100x 100 yard, lol, and trying to run off some of her energy. |

| Sit then lay didn't work for Lola either, she picked it up really quickly when I started her standing and then asked her to lay down. Now she can do it either way. |

I successfully taught Teddy to lay down by teaching him to sit first and then gently pulling his front feet forward and gently pushing his back at the same time until he was in the lay down position then giving him a treat in that position. He eventually did it himself! It took about two weeks or ten 20 minute training sessions. Oh! and meant to say - don't forget to say the command as you're putting your dog in position so that they know to associate the action an the word -good luck! | |

| I used the treat with hand down on the floor, gave the command and didn't give Hannah the treat until she tried. I rewarded with the smallest try. She picked up really quick but sometimes I still have to tell her "all the way down". She knows the command but tries to get her way (all the time)! That's just how she rolls!
