Should I use a leash to have puppy go potty out in yard? When I take my 9 1/2 week old Sophie to go potty outside in the yard, she wants to go in the mulch beds and try to eat dead leaves. This is my third day of having her home. First day, I tried taking her outside without a leash, but when she kept going for the dead leaves and shrubs, I started using a leash the second day. Now, when we go out on the leash, she will go potty (and I praise her), but she still tries to stop and eat the grass and pulls on the leash so she can get to the mulch bed and leaves. After she goes potty, she won't walk back to the front door with me--she stops in her tracks and won't come because she wants to get in the mulch beds. I want to keep her outside longer to see if she will poop, but it becomes a tug of war trying to keep her from the leaves, etc. I'm afraid of her putting all that stuff in her mouth and her eating the grass..I'm constrantly trying to take stuff she picks up out of her mouth. I end up wanting to get her inside so she will not be tempted by the shrubs and leaves. I resort to having to pick her up and bring her inside because she doesn't want to walk back inside with me. Do most yorkie pups want to eat grass and leaves?? I want her to be able to play outside after she goes to the bathroom, but she ends up trying to eat everything!!! I want her to enjoy going outside and learn that is where she is to potty, but I am worried about her eating leaves and grass. She knows that I don't want her to put that stuff in her mouth because I always take it from her! What can I do to deter her from this??? I want to enjoy the yard to potty and play safely on her leash. Does anyone have any suggestions or ideas? Thank you!!!

Is your yard fenced in? Yes your puppy sounds normal. They are stubborn at times Can you guide her away from that area? She is just a baby and will get distracted easily. Take her to the same part of your yard so she will know what you want her to do. Maybe play tug of war or play ball. She will learn in time and be just fine.

Thanks for your reply. No, my yard is not fenced in. However, I decided today to put exercise pen in the yard to confine her to that area. If she goes to bathroom, I plan to reward her, along with praise and a treat, by taking her out of pen on the leash. We'll see how that goes!

Keep some treats in your pocket, do not pull on leash until she is leash trained or pup will just pull back. Use a treat in front and guide dog with treat. This will leash train without trauma.
