| Planning for new puppy Hi, Our pup will be coming to us at 11 weeks in mid-July and we've been gradually getting ready. But it's been over 15 years since we've had a puppy. We're planning to train him to use pee-pads since it's not always easy to take him outside at night (a lot of not-very-friendly raccoons in the area). We know that it's important to not let him out in the house unsupervised. We'll have a crate and an x-pen and will set up the x-pen in the kitchen with a pee-pad so that when we're out shopping etc. he'll have a bit of movement but won't be out in the house. And at night we plan to have him in his crate in the bedroom with us. However, much of the day, we're in the family room which is down several stairs from the kitchen. I was thinking of setting up an xpen there as well (we have two) for when we can't watch him every second. Is that a good idea or should his crate instead? If I use the xpen, should I put a pee pad in that one too? If so, do I take him to that pee-pad to pee when he's in that room -- or to the kitchen (where the regular pee-pad will be)? If he's with us in the family room most of the time, I gather I should also keep a dish of water there? Thanks. Linda |

| I think the x- pen would be better in the family room than the crate. I am new to the puppy world myself so I am not an expert by any means. I have pee pads in a few rooms so I think a pee pad in the x-pen is a good idea. I don't think it would hurt to have water there either if you will be there the majority of the time. What I have learned about my puppy is they can and will get into everything. So unless you want to watch every second, an x-pen is a good idea. Also, if out of the pen know that anything and I mean anything they can see will go in their mouth! Shoes and cords are another toy of choice. Haha. You will love your new fur baby! They are so much fun!

| Oh good! Thanks! We're lucky to have a couple of xpens and it seemed reasonable to use them both but I just wasn't sure about the peepads in more than one place. I'm hoping that when he's older, he'll use ones in the kitchen but am quite happy to have that not any time soon. Yes, it's been a while, but I remember how damaging a puppy can get. Many years ago, our bouvier pup ate half of our bathroom cabinet in 10 minutes. I heard the gnawing sound but didn't realise what it meant until too late :-) (and thanks for the welcome, intilis!) | Hello and congrats! New puppies are so much fun! I live in an area where we have hawks, owles and coyotes so my Yorkie and my Chi are both potty pad trained. I also had a rescue that had a litter of 7 last August and at 6 weeks old they were potty pad trained without ever going outside so I understand where you are coming from. I would try putting the x-pen in the main area of the house where you and your family are most of the time and use a smaller crate for bed time as the pup will need way less romping room when it is supposed to be sleeping. I would place potty pads in all pens and crates but be careful not to place too many around the house because a pup can get confused very easily. Start from day one. Your pup should have to potty as soon as you get him home so have everything ready. I had carpet in my living room and I am proud to say that not one of my 7 puppies ever used the bathroom on it. They would actually go and find their potty pad. One of the best tips I can give is to not let your pup have free roam of your house until trained. A puppy has to potty very often and especially after eating, sleep and play. Good luck to you and congrats!!! And...welcome to YT!

| I'm sure a yorkie won't eat through a bathroom cabinet :-) -- at least I hope not -- bouviers are enormous and ours at four months was many times larger than a yorkie. I've wondered about washable peepads as well as about peepad holders. Do people change the peepads everytime the puppies pee, or once a day? And what do people do with male puppes and peepads when the puppies start to raise their legs to pee? We have hawks too in our neighbourhood and we can hear the coyotes at night though so far they haven't come close to the house -- more reason though for pottying indoors. Thanks. Linda |

| I only have the potty pads in two of our bathrooms which has worked out fine for my 8 month old fur baby. He caught on very quickly but I also trained him to go outside. Sometimes he'll use the pads if my DH who is home all day forgets to take him out. Mine never go outside unsupervised and at night they use a grass patch I have on my balcony. You'll see .. They catch on quickly |

| Hi, It worked out quite well. We put a playpen and bed with peepad in both the family room and the kitchen. Monty is mostly using the pen in the family room but we have the kitchen pen available and can pop him in for a pee there if we think he's ready. At night he sleeps in his crate beside our bed. He's 14 weeks old today and a real darling. He's mostly using his peepads for pee but we have to watch for poo. He's getting used to his harness and lead with me in the yard. He's just three pounds now so I doubt I'll be walking him out on the regular sidewalks til he's older. When is it normal to start training him sit, stay, down, etc.? I've been thinking of getting a clicker and working a bit with him at least on tricks .... But is he too young? Linda |
