| Hand shy puppy Hello, This is my first time posting on Yorkie Talk and i was hoping for some sound advice. I picked up Bentley at 17 weeks old , flew out to get him personally, I knew he was older then most puppies leave for there new homes but we were going on a three week holiday and i didn't want to pick him up and then leave him with a stranger so I asked the breeder if she would consider socializing him and I paid an extra 100.00 a week for this service. I knew i was in trouble when she left the hotel room because Bentley howled and would not come near me for over an hour, after which through the plane ride and car ride home he bonded to me and only me. it has been two weeks since he has been home and he will still not let my husband or son(24year old) touch him. He will take a treat from them but if they or anyone else other then me tried to pet him he backs away. Now a couple of days ago he started barking at them when they get home or come down the stairs. His tail is up and he runs over to them barking, once when my son extended his hand to be sniffed Bentley snapped at him. My question is how to proceed without making the situation worse. I have told my husband and son to ignore him when he is barking at them and I tell him no and try to redirect his focus. I have been taking him everywhere I can with me to socialize him. He will go up to people and take a treat from them, but he pulls towards the exit door to leave the store etc. He seems fine with other dogs, a little nervous but otherwise not bad. Any suggestions would be most helpful. |

| Hi and Welcome to YT! Congratulations on your new pup! A few suggestions: Have DH and DS wear a T shirt for a day or two, and put them in the pup's bed. This will help acclimate him to their scent. Spend time down on the floor with him to meet him on his level. Offering treats is good. Also the men could be in charge of feeding the pup, this may help change his view of them. Also try peanut butter on the hands, to encourage licking and not biting and prolonged contact. Also have to recommend a new puppy vet check if it hasn't been done yet and discuss his behavior while you're there. Best of luck, let us know how it goes....

| Thanks for the helpful tips, Bentley will take treats from them and lick there hands now, barking is getting better as well, but no touching please! I really hope he comes around soon. I have taken Bentley to the vet and all is good, he is a Healthy pup. After many treats he let the vet hold him while he examined him but he wasn't happy about it, the vet said that even though he seemed really uncomfortable his heart rate was slow and steady, which is good means he wasn't totally freaking out. I will try the shirts in his cage, and continue to socialize him as much as possible. We have always had German Shepard's and never had a problem like this, this is totally new to us, but then again we always socialized our pups early. Has anyone else had this issue with a older pup? |

| I agree with Kathy's suggestion to have your husband and son get down on the floor as much as possible. Have them sit with some fun toys and let Bentley come to them on his own terms. Your husband and son can throw a toy back and forth to try to entice Bentley, but tell them not to be too loud or animated. My boys are very affectionate, but they don't really like traditional style petting -- like rubbing the hand down the back. They prefer massage style or gentle scratching, mostly behind the ears, on the shoulders, the chest area, and the back haunches. Make sure your husband and son don't approach Bentley by putting their hands over his head. Many dogs dislike that or it makes them nervous. Try leaving Bentley with your husband and son alone. My one boy who isn't keen about visitors is completely different if I am not in the room or in the house.

| Update on Bentley! He will approach my husband and son more often has stopped barking at them when they come into a room, will take treats from them quite calmly and licks their hands, but still "no touching please". But I do agree with you I have to leave them alone with him and see what happens he is extremely attached to me since I work from home he is with me all the time, thank you! The other day I was sitting on the couch, Bentley was sleeping on Ottoman, my husband came into the room and was talking to me then reached to touch my shoulder, Bentley ran over to me, on my lap and tried to bite my husbands hand, Is this a territorial action or a protective action? |
