| Not sure what's going on here. Shadow's behavior has changed lately. She has always gotten excited when people came to the door, but would calm down quickly. Now? When there is a knock or the doorbell rings she goes nuts, she actually sounds hysterical! And whimpers. A little history: She will be 4 in May. We just moved into a new house 4 months ago, before that we were in an apartment for 5 and a half months while the house was being built. Her barking started at the apartment, she was not used to all the noises. But still not hysterical. It got worse when we moved into the house. There is still construction going on all around us, but that does not seem to bother her. She is even barking at the birds flying by the window, and we have always had a bird feeder so these are not new. A month ago, she had dental work, cleaning done. She seems a little different since then. She can be sleeping right next to me on the couch and will start growling. Nothing is happening no noises. I tell her "shush" and she quiets down. We also have a 5 year old Vizsla, that she has been raised with. When the Vizsla hears the door she will hurry to the door and Shadow will follow her, barking at her! The last week or so she has started "humping" the much larger Vizsla. I have read the thread regarding barking and we are going to try that, but what about the other behavior? Avy one have any ideas? Sorry for such a long post. |

I would give her lots of extra love and attention. Don't punish her for barking but do enforce the sit, stay when someone is at the door. Working on the "no bark" command would help, too. Treats for obedience are always a big plus when trying to train a dog not to bark. Insecurity often brings on guarding activities by the dog. They feel they need to protect their territory because no one else will. They see it as their job. By teaching her some obedience commands she will become more secure about her place at your new home. | |
