Puppy Going Potty In Her Crate I got my little girl just a month ago and we're having some trouble with her peeing in the crate. She turns 4 months in just a couple of days. I leave her in the crate for no more than 4.5 hours during the day. At night I feed her around 5:30 and then remove water. I put her in her crate around 10:30 or 11 and get her up promptly at 5:00 AM. I initially was getting her up around 3:00 AM to potty but then she would cry for three hours until I got up for the day. So taking away water and getting her up at 5:00 was working pretty well. Each and every time I take her out of her crate we go straight outside to potty. For the first couple of weeks that I had her this worked pretty well (outside of the yelping, crying and barking that comes along with crate training) and she never peed in her crate. However, in the past two weeks she's started sporadically going potty in her crate. I can't figure out a pattern of when or why she does it. At four months I thought she'd be able to go four hours and most days she does but she has an accident once or twice a week. I work full time so even getting home every four hours is tough so I'm frantically trying to figure out what to do. Some things I've tried: -taking out all the blankets and just putting a thin towel on the bottom -I initially fed her in her crate but had stopped once she was no longer scared to go in it....I've once again started feeding her in her crate -She has toys in her crate -I took out the stuffed animal because she often went potty on just that -She gets a little puppy kong with frozen peanut butter in it when she goes in. Some sites suggest putting a longer lasting treat in with her (like a bone) but I'm scared she'll choke on it while I'm gone. I can handle this if it's something she'll grow out of but I'm nervous that it's becoming more frequent and becoming a habit. Any ideas how I can break her of this?

I wouldn't ever put a bone in with a yorkie. Your right they could choke very easily. Jess did the same thing when we trained her. She started off great, then regressed. She still does it from time to time in the house a year later. I felt bad about having her hold it all night so I got a medium crate and put a bed in the front and a pad in the back. She pees (sometimes poops)on it either early morning or during the night and goes right back to sleep. She goes to bed by 9 and gets up around 7 so we all sleep and she gets to pee when she wants. She doesn't pee on her bed anymore ever. I guess I would hate to have to hold my pee all night if I had to go and they are so small I couldn't let her hold it either..

Donating Senior Yorkie Talker | Going Potty in Crate Could it be possible that she has a bladder infection? Our Jaz, is in a crate as well, but it is opened to a play area that also has in indoor dog toilet in there. During the night we ofter hear her come out, go potty, and head back to bed. However, if this is something new for her, it might be medical. Fingers and paws crossed for the best. Happy Valentines Day |

Thanks for the information! I did take a urine sample this morning and bring it into the vet. Turns out she does have a small amount of white blood cells in her urine. However, I'm definitely still open to suggestions as I won't know for a while if this is UTI-related or more of a behavioral issue. I'm a first-time puppy owner so I'll take all the advice I can get!

So my little Bianca has now been on antibiotics for 10 days and is still exhibiting the same symptoms. She's still peeing in her crate every couple of days and she's still having accidents in my house after having been outside less than an hour prior. I called my vet to see if she possibly needs to be on a different antibiotic and they are so caught up on the fact that it is abnormal for young puppies to get UTIs and are refusing to see her to do a urine sample, culture and sensitivity test. They told me I should wait until she's peeing red blood and then bring her in. She's four months old and during the day I don't leave her more than 5 hours (usually only four) and at night she's in her crate about 6 hours. I tried making her crate smaller over the weekend and she's still messing in it. Am I leaving her too long? Sometimes she pees in the crate when I'm only gone for 2-3 hours. Should I try to get into another vet? I am nervous to let it go in case she does still have the UTI. But maybe there's something else with crate training that I need to try? Any suggestions, advice or feedback are welcome!

unless she is doing little dribbles all the time I doubt it is a uti issue, but im not a vet. It could be she is nervous. Jess always pees when she is nervous. She is also really young and pretty much a toddler at this point. I would try a medium sized crate and use a fabric potty pad for now. (she will eat the paper ones) You can get them at walmart in the baby section. She will grow out of it but at two Jess still has her accidents and I'm convinced its an attention thing for her. Your pup may get very nervous caged up and just freaks out and pees. Try the bigger crate and put a shirt with your scent on it in her bed..
