Why "Alpha Theory" and "Dominance Training" are NOT the way to go Thought I'd provide some helpful links for those new to training or dogs in general. WHY the 'dominance' theory and 'alpha dog' training is NOT the way to train a dog and common misconceptions. I thought it would be nice to have a thread people can link back to, when people are asking for help. Feel free to add more links and information. Thank you for the links. My personal experience with Max and Teddy proves to me that dominance training is unnecessary and counterproductive. Whenever I put more effort into working with them, focusing on positive reinforcement methods, I get great results. |
Thanks for posting! This should be a 'Sticky' and added to the YT Library! |
Great info! I really value your opinions, Brit, and I appreciate the research you do. |
I watched a ton of ceasar millan you tube vids...but in the end I reached my own way that works for Joey. I did a ton of reading here which has helped soooo soooo much...repetition and of course, treats and praise.... My grand daughter and I made some treats using an internet recipe and Joey LOVES them. What I found for myself is that it was more about training myself to be consistent...easier said than done some days. |
Great thread! Looks like lots of good articles. Dominating a dog will only create a fearful animal who doesn't trust the trainer or sometimes humans in general and some become aggressive. What's so awful, it's not necessary to correct behavior or train a dog and will often create a nervous, anxious dog if alpha dominance is routinely reinforced. |
Love it. Thanks for all the links in one place. I was encouraged to use more dominant techniques in the first obedience classes I signed up for. It didn't feel right to me, so we quit. I found a school that used positive techniques, and the change was dramatic. My dog learned even faster and, more importantly, he learned to enjoy the classes. |
