| I'm having trouble phasing out treats I know about the lottery system, where they randomly get rewarded for the trick. The problem is Lola knows she's supposed to get a treat for doing a trick, and if she doesn't get it she just sits and stares at me, refusing to do anything until she gets it. I've tried waiting it out and it just doesn't work, she'll either continue staring at me or walk away. She also does this with grooming, after I put her on the floor she stands there waiting until I give her her treat. She's known most of her tricks long enough (months) and does them reliably, so I should be able to phase out the treats. |

| yorkies are too smart for their own good! Molli does this sometimes too, if she does a trick and I don't give her a treat she will bark at me or make this pitiful whining noise. Try pairing the treat with physical praise like some rubs and a happy 'good job'. Then take away treat and still do the physical praise. If she is still being stubborn just say 'no more' or something to that effect and walk away. This may be hard, yorkies can be stubborn but you cant give in, just walk away and ignore her until she gives up. She will catch on eventually.

| I agree, do the treats intermittently. Don't have the treat in your hand, though. Use excited praise and belly rubs as suggested above. My boys sometimes refuse to perform if I am not holding treats. I tease them, "You don't work for free?" Then they will perform. Sometimes I will take them to the kibble can after that, and if not -- I distract them with something else.
