Problems with my yorkie Hello, I'm an owner of a 19 month old yorkie. He is a really sweet, loving dog. His name is Mason. Mason has never been able to grasp the concept of going to the bathroom outside. He goes outside in our lawn most of the time, but it seems like at least once or twice per week he goes to the bathroom inside the house. He doesn't really ever let us know he has to go out, I just take him out every hour or so when we're at home because he starts whining (he whines a lot and we are never fully sure what he is whining about). During the day when we're gone, we leave him in our enclosed laundry room with his food, water and his open crate. He does not have free reign of the house. He has no issues holding it during the day and never has had an accident when in the laundry room or his play pen. Do you guys think crate training for a few weeks would be helpful? Would this mean putting him in the crate itself, in the laundry room with free reign to the crate, or if we should move the crate to our common area when doing crate training? My wife and I are very frustrated with the accidents. We are also very frustrated with the general lack of knowing what he is whining about all the time. He is extremely well taken care of (plenty of high quality blue buffalo food, fresh water daily, an hour or so of play time, plenty of cuddling, he is walked frequently in the summer but less now that it is cold - we play a lot of fetch inside instead). Do you guys have any advice on how to get the dog to notify us that he has to go outside? We have been trying to get him to ring a bell for months, but he simply won't do it on his own. I always put his paw on the bell to ring it, then put the leash on him, then take him outside. Thanks. Any information will be helpful. Mason is really frustrating us these days.

Hi & Welcome to YT ! I'm not sure how long your leaving him alone during the day but if it's over 4 or 5 hrs, that's too long for him to hold it. Do you have potty pads down for him ? if not I would recommend it. As for the whining, he's trying to tell you something & at 19 mo he's probably just bored & wants to play. Do you have chew bones/toys for him ? as this will help him release some energy. As for the accidents in the house & the not ringing the bell, when you take him out for a potty/poo tell him go outside & go potty then ring the bell before you go out. While he's in the actual act of going poo/pee, tell him good boy go potty/poo & do this EVERY time he goes. When he does his business outside give him a treat & again tell him good boy go potty/poo outside, he will get it after a bit. At his age it's not uncommon to have accidents now & then especially if it's happening when your gone for long hrs. Crating him while your gone will most likely only cause him to do his business in the crate as he's most likely not able to hold it that long so I recommend trying the potty pads. Also some dogs never do learn to give verbal notification, they just sit & stare at you so be sure Your not missing it if this is what he's doing. Last edited by lillymae; 11-17-2013 at 09:05 PM.

| I have the same issue with my 2 year old pup. Not only does he not ask to go outside, but he will often run and hide under the coffee table when he sees his leash. He sees my older dog scratch at the door and ask to go out all the time but he hasn't grasped the concept. I started using pee pads with him when it got colder and he's actually using them fairly well. His aim is god awful, but at least he's trying and not just going random places. I've never had a dog that was pee pad trained until now, but I actually prefer it to going outside in the winter!! BTW....it seems like yorkies, and small dogs in general have a harder time with the potty training. Not all yorkies, as plenty of people have talked about how easy it was to train their dog...but it seems like a lot of them have a really hard time with it. He has plenty of toys and things to chew on. We also play a lot of vigorous fetch. He gets a lot of activity and love The issue that I'm having is when we're just hanging out at home in the family room, he'll sneak off when he has a chance (Say when I go to the kitchen or something), and go to the bathroom in the corner of the family room without giving us any indication that he has to go or anything. He does whine sometimes, but not always. Does anyone have any advice on the procedure to teach a yorkie to notify us with a bell? Thanks! | |

I think you either have to catch him in the act and let him know its not ok and immed take him outside or put a pee pad in the laundry room during the day so just in case he has to go he will go on it when are gone. then maybe he will automatically run to it if your home especially if their is a nice reward for it. Either way its training from scratch I think..

Hi-I'm having similar problems with my Yorkie-CJ. Only had him since 9/1, he's around 2 and don't know his history. He would NOT crate train, just peed in it and sat in it. During the day he is in an enclosed garage and only occasionally goes in there, and if he does its right by the door. At home we've had to put pads in the corner of our dining room and he consistently goes there if I don't watch him every second. Even if he's just been outside, he'll come in and use the pad. Its definitely frustrating! I'm trying to catch him when I see him heading that way and put him out, but he defnitely sneaks off to do it and its hard to catch him! Work in progress for sure.

Bathroom I am sorry you are having this problem, mainly when you are home. Some here have found that keeping them tethered to you when you are home stops them running off and peeing in a corner behind your back. When the leash is attached to you you will know when he wants to leave and you can then pick him up and take him to a pee pad or outside. Perhaps treat and praise him when you pick him up to go. Good luck, it is a tough problem.

My Abby is two and just now seeming to understand us a little better. As soon as I slack off on the treats and good girl for peeing outside she seems to have more accidents in the house. I keep Cheerios in a clean parmesan cheese container on the dryer by the garage door. As soon as she squats(outside) I grab the container , shake it and get that cheerio ready!I am home all the time and try not to let her out too often- she seems to think outside is just play time not peetime.
