Yorkie's and litterbox My dog Bentley has gotten very good at going to the litter box. He goes in there 90% of the time and we have only had him 2 weeks! So he is pretty much fully housebroken but he doesnt go outside! Like if I take him out for a walk or something he never goes outside. I really would like to get him to go outside and use the litter box only if we arent home and he has to go. I was wondering if those of you who have yorkies that use the litter box have the same problem? Do your yorkies only use the litter box or go outside as well? If so how long did it take them to begin going outside? My previous yorkie did both but I really do not remember at all when he was a puppy and how long it took.

Biddy does the same thing. She will very rarely go outside. It seems like when we go on walks she holds it until we get home! I'm not sure what to do either...

Maggie uses a litterbox inside but will go outside as well. I guess the first time she ever went outside was after a long car ride and she couldnt hold it any longer so she just went. Also, I live in an apt complex where there are a lot of dogs and Maggie likes to leave her scent around them.

Elvis is litter-boxed trained too. He holds it when we go for a walk, which is actually quite nice because I don't have to worry about clean-up He will go outside on occasion, but it is mainly just to mark his territory. I'm just thankful I don't have to worry about mistakes around the house and I can let him have free-reign of the house while I'm at work

That is a nice luxury..run of the house. How did you get the litterbox training to work? Was it total supervision for several days or several weeks or what? Do you put a wee wee pad in it or actually litter? Hefner chewed on the litter I got from Petco. I wasn't sure it was okay so I took it out and put in a wee wee pad. Do you have just one litter box or several in different parts of the house?

Have you guys seen the 'portapotty' thingys? I told my husband that someone needed to invent a litter box with grass, and lo and behold, someone already has! http://www.petapotty.com/home.html It's kinda expensive. I think I could find a wooden crate, fill it with sod and put a puppy pad under it for urine. It would be nice to have something to use indoors when it's cold & rainy outside.

We just use the normal clumping kitty litter, he never liked the dog pellet litter. He played in it at first, but took to it rather quickly. We have three litter boxes, one for each floor of the house, they all have the same little litter-catch mats that cats use to keep the litter from scattering. We bought the largest dog litter box they make, which allows him to hike his leg on the wall . We had to keep him confined to one area of the house initially. We chose the kitchen and just used baby gates to keep him inside the kitchen area. When we came home in the evening we would allow him free reign of the house (but he always stayed by us). If he made a mistake we'd confine him back to the kitchen area. By about 6-7 months old, he had it down pretty good. He hates the litter box to be messy though. We clean out the morning 'hockey pucs and poo' (so easy with clumping kind) and he is fine until we come home after work. Then we scoop out whatever he has done during the day and then he's fine until the morning routine again. But I think keeping it clean is probably the most important thing to encouraging him to use it. It took us a bit to figure that part out, but once we did, he'd use it all the time. I love never having to get up early to let him out or freeze my butt off in the winter Good luck to everyone with your training.
