| Trouble with the lay down command/trick I'm not putting to much emphasis on this as Holly is only 3 going on 4 months old but started to do a few "training" sessions a day .. I saw a post on here with a lady that has videos on youtube explaining some of the techniques for training your dog to follow some of the more simple commands .... She put the little treat under the dogs chest and when the down went down to get it she says lay down and give the dog the treat ... repeating till the dog lay on its belly (after a few weeks I would presume) ... then only giving the treat once she's fully down .. eventually the dog lays down by following the lay down command (then treat is given) ... So my little tike go the sit command pretty quickly and now goes around randomly sitting in front of us with the hopes of getting a treat :-P She picked up the fetch (I say go get it) and bring it command... she's not always consistent with the "give it" command yet.... So with the lay down command the first day she kind of went down on her belly, but the 2nd day and each day after that she just backs up with her head down to get the treat .... In this case do I "push" her down and once she's flat give her a treat or is there another method to giving them the que to lay down ? Cheers and thanks ... this is my first puppy that been so young (got her at 9 - 10 weeks old) and with my other dogs didn't really do any of this apart from the "sit" and "stay" command .. I know she is really young and I need to be patient and I am but I like to learn myself as much as I can :-)

| Lola had trouble with laying down at first too. Most of the things I read said to have the dog sit and then move the treat down, Lola would move her head down a bit and then look at me. Then I saw a website that said if they have trouble start with them standing and move the treat down. Lola got it on the first try. Now she can lay down from sitting or standing. |

| One technique I learned was to back your pooch up against a wall. Put the treat close to the nose and gradually move it towards the floor, giving the command. You can also make a small arch with your knees, put the treat on one side and give the command as the pooch creeps under your legs. Your pooch is very young for learning commands. Be patient.

| I put Teddy on the couch with his nose facing the edge. Starting with the treat at his nose, I lowered it just below the edge of the couch, which required him to go down on his belly to reach the treat. After practicing this way, he finally got it on the floor.

| Lay down command Don't worry, if she is doing "Down" with a bit of trouble at first, then she WILL be able to do it after more practices. Just be consistent with your method and word. My Yorkie pulled a bit of a surprise in his little 6-dog group at the Pet Smart Store obedience class. We did "Sit" in the class, and I thought it would be So Easy for Taffy since I had already worked on Sit with him at home, and he would do it for me with no problem...SURPRISE! He hated the "cold linoleum floor" at the store! The Store's Trainer said some dogs who learn commands on a comfy home rug or a grassy yard may Not like a new, cold, hard surface. So, we would Finally get him to sit flat on his little tushy for a "treat", but this was after he would "hover" his butt 1/2" over their chilly floor...as if he was going "to die" if he had to put his butt on that cold linoleum! We were all trying not to grin because it WAS funny to watch Taffy trying to avoid touching their floor with his little behind. We also took the doggies outside to the real Grass area next to the store. If I said "Sit" out there, he would do it with no hesitation! Later, the class started to work on "Down", and I thought that Taffy would really refuse to lie his tummy on their cold linoleum floor. WRONG again!..He would lie down faster than any other dog in his class. Even the trainer was surprised! She said usually "small dogs" did not like "Down" in a group class as that position made them feel more vulnerable near the bigger dogs in class. We figured he had enough tummy hair, so the linoleum floor didn't bother him! We also noticed that he only seemed to "like" just one other dog in his class, "Missy". (She was an older Bassett Hound female -- a "mom figure" for Taffy who was @ 8 months old.) The rest of the dogs he either ignored or stayed away from, but he did like the other "people" we met in the store. I've heard some people say Yorkies can be "snappy" around strangers; not Taffy! He wanted to get a pat on his little head from everyone he met, and then he wanted to lick the person's hand as well. He happily greeted everyone from toddlers to older senior citizens! Our trainer said I as fortunate that Taffy was "very at ease with people", she also said some small breeds did not always react that way and some could get "nippy" around strangers. So, the class was an interesting learning experience for me. I have even had my hubby use the correct terms at home. The trainer said Do not say the word "Down" when you have a doggie trying to crawl onto someone's lap, you should say "Off" for those situations! She said it confuses the dog to use "Down" when you do not mean to "lie down |

Our trainer said I as fortunate that Taffy was "well socialized", she also said some small breeds did not always react that well and some get "nippy" around strangers. So, the class was quiet an interesting learning experience for me. I have even gotten my hubby to use the correct terms at home! One point the Trainer was firm about: The trainer said Do Not say the word "Down" when you have a dog trying to crawl onto someone's lap, you should say "Off" for those situations! She said it confuses the dog to say "Down" when You Do Not Mean to "lie down on the floor or ground"! She told us to listen to other people using "Down" with dogs...she said many are not using the word correctly, and it just confuses the dog! She is right! I catch my husband saying "Down" when he means "Get Off Me". NOW, I ,will have to retrain my hubby--Ha!! HE will be harder to train than Taffy!! |

| Phoebe is really good with commands, but just couldn't seem to get "down". What finally worked was when I sat on the floor & had her crawl under my bent knee for her treat.... now she cant wait to plop into a "down" & wait for her cookie!
