8 week old puppy HATES her new collar. We bought Zöe her new collar today after her vet visit and she absolutely hates it or is scared of it? I've never seen anything like it, and she certainly isn't my first puppy. When I'm holding her or she is in her little bed, she is just fine...but when she wakes up or is no longer distracted by cuddles she flips out by either whining continuously (just like she does when she needs to go outside) Or she will just sit still like a statue or sulk closely to the floor and bury herself under a blanket, etc. It isn't too tight, it isn't too heavy, it doesn't have any type of embellishments or decor on it. I guess my question is...how long does it take them to get acclimated to this foreign feeling? Prior to Zöe I've had 3 teacup chihuahuas and they never freaked out over a collar like this.

Yorkies have small tracheas and we highly suggest using a halter instead of collars to avoid collapsing a trachea. Personally as active as they are, I worry about getting hung up with collars and choking. In answer to your question, she is very young so I wouldn't worry about using anything until she is closer to 12 weeks, normally when our babies go to new homes. Watching for low blood sugar is important at her age. Last edited by Amazing Yorkies; 08-14-2013 at 09:42 PM.

Ok, I can do that. But, when she reacts the same way (as I am sure she will) how long will it take her to become acclimated to it? A few days? Week? Month? Varies from puppy to puppy? I just hate seeing her sad about it.

Once she's a little older, it should only take a day or two. If you just got her, she's scared, confused, and too young to leave her mom so you will have to work on socialization, manners, and getting through the fear stages. These things are what Mom teaches them during the 6-12 week ages. Try to avoid stressful situations that will drop her sugar level until she is 12 weeks old.

| I think collars are extremely important but only for an id tag because these little ones are known to dart out the doors its always best to have one on them if you lose sight of them and they are gone unless they are going in a crate. I use the very thin ones that are 3/15" to make sure it is very comfortable. Now when your using the leash you need to make sure to never hook it to the collar but to a harness. All these things are brand new to them so it is going to take them time to get used to things. I would not leave the harness on all the time and only put it on when you need to use the leash because a harness can be chewed on and cause hair loss where it rubs if it is constant. Sense she is so young it is best to keep her inside and not take her to pet stores or for walks until about 2 weeks after her last puppy shots or she could get parvo and it seems to be running rampant right now.

Thank you, Taylor. Your response was exactly what I was hoping for as a newbie (to this site) and it being my first time to post here. ID purposes was the exact reason I bought the collar for Zoe, just to be on the safe side when I'm taking her outside to potty and not using a leash as of yet since she is so young. I do intend to get her harness as well, my husband actually had picked out one for her the same night we got the collar and we decided to wait a couple more weeks before getting it. Again, thank you for your kind response.

My boy freaked out when w first put on his collar. He started screaming like he was in pain, freaked me out until I realized it his collar he was scared of. He just held him and gave him chicken. Then took of the collar. About 1 hour later did it again. By the end of the night he was fine.

All is well :-) It took 3 days, but she is completely used to it now. We will transitionto a harness once she is ready for her leash. Thanks everyone.
