| New Here...New Puppy Hi There, I am new to the forums as we just bought a 15 week old Yorkie/Chihuahua cross...We are having a few issues which we kinda knew we would...Our Puppy (male) starting marking our house since my Brother-in-law came over the other day and has 2 dogs of his own..There are 2 issues....One is we take him out almost every 2 hours...sometimes sooner and he always pees and poops most of the time but the last few days he squats and pees almost minutes after we bring him in from outside..And he has just peed outside too...Why is he doing this... Second is he has began marking spots since my BIL came over...This he intentionally lifts his leg...We say NO and get abrupt with our voices and then directly take him out... He was kennel trained(not pee pad) and had a dog run with doggie doors directly to the outside so he had free reign all day to relieve himself.....Our family is starting to get discouraged..the first 3 days we had him he didn't do any of this...now he is peeing in the house at least 3 times a day...twice as an accident I suspect and once intentional... Can anyone offer any suggestions??We bought some "No Go"! spray and he hasn't peed in those spots again but just finds new ones...:-( My husband is starting to get annoyed...we had to work really hard to get him to agree to get a dog in the first place.. I have seen this doggie Apartment crate system advertised where it is a puppy training system but I am unsure whether it will work since we already have starting teaching him to go to the front door when he wants out and not peeing on a pad etc...He hasn't yet learned 100% that is where he needs to go..I take him out every 2 hours throughout the night also and he pees everytime...so I don't know if it will confuse him or what to all of a sudden crate him at night...he also sleeps with the kids on their bed... He just peed on the kitchen floor as we speak and he was just out 20 minutes ago...I don't know what to think..Will this get better?? Love my Pup but starting to think this was a bad idea...Been 30 years since I have had a family pet.... |

| I just wanted to say welcome to our group. I'm not great in the training area, so maybe someone else will be able to help with that.

| I have never dealt with a male dog, I have only owned females but I can tell you even with them it is tricky. I know someone here will be better suited to help you out with actual tips. Dont get discouraged a few months from now you wont even remember that you were frustrated.

| Try not to get discouraged. I have a male Yorkie. This is my first dog since I was a child. Patience is important. Try to get him into a routine as soon as possible. Since your puppy is so young, untrained and hasn't been nuetered, he will mark/pee all the time. First of all, as puppy, his bladder is small. So anything he drinks, will come out shortly after he drinks it. Also if he takes a nap, once he wakes up, take him out! We used Pee pads for King when he first brought home until about 5 or 6 months, and then just used them for times when we couldn't take him out due to weather or something like that. You will have to get him comfortable on the pad if you are going to use them. King was scared of the pad! But he eventually got used to it. We do not use them at all now, as he doesn't have very many incidents in the house anymore. We started crate training King immediately. We quickly learned that they will not pee in their crate. This is their little den, their little home. They want it to be comfortable. Make sure the crate is comfy, like with blankets and toy or 2. Make it somewhere he will want to go. Never use it for punishment. it is supposed to be used for positive reinforcement. King is almost 8 months old, and he still pees in the house. We are still trying to get him to poop outside! The peeing doesn't happen as much in the house anymore, he is getting used to going outside and is even starting to let us know when he has to go. Yorkies are so smart, they know when they are doing something they shouldn't, or at least it seems that way. They are equally as stubborn. You have to be patient, you will be training him for many more months to come! Just be consistent! That is so important! |

| Thanks everyone for your advice...We find we have good days and bad days...Some days he won't have an accident at all inside and other days...several...It seems that he is having accidents every 15 minutes though...we turn around and he has peed on the floor and we just took him out 5 minutes before..He even peed on our bed(grrrr) last night 20 minutes after taking him out...Hubby was not impressed....yet he will go 3 hours during the night before I take him out and no problem...We do leave a pee pad at the front door and several times he has gone on there but he also randomly pees where ever also and it squatting not marking ....He started to mark a bit but hasn't really done that in about a week...I am just not sure what to think....I read that with Yorkies this can go on all their lives..I sure hope not....I understand a puppy but after a year I will be quite upset if it continues... |
