| Potty trip mixed with play time Our yorkie puppy, Simba, is almost 3 month old and has been with us for two weeks. He's almost potty trained, he would sit by the door or ring the bell when he wants to go outside. However, we live in an apartment complex, we don't have fenced yard. So we take him out for potty on a leash every time. He sometimes goes right away, but he would still keep sniffing around, so we thought he might have more business to do. Instead, he always finds some leaves or other random stuff and get totally distracted and probably thinks it's play time outside. Now, he would ring the bell just to get out and play, not even potty It's like four time in one hour... How can I stop him from tricking us to take him out for play? Maybe I should pick him up as soon as he finishes his business? Also a minor thing, Simba goes hyper couple times at night. We leave him in a four by four exercise pen with pee pads. He sometimes would cry for us around 3AM and being hyper for ten minutes. I usually pet him to calm down. Will he grow out of his mid-night hyperness? Thanks!!!!! |

| Hi and Welcome you and Simba to YT! Sounds like Simba is a healthy puppy! I know it probably isn’t funny to you, but your story made me chuckle- seems Simba has you wrapped around that finger of yours!! I think it is important for training purposes to take him out when he does ring the bell. Like you said maybe wait until he has done his business and take him back in, maybe you can reward him with a treat when you come in so he remembers “ Hey I get a yummy treat when I’m done with my potty’s” Maybe that would help incise him to get his little tail inside LOL To stop the hyperness at night, unfortunately he is a puppy still and like a puppy he has tons of energy! If he doesn't get all his energy drained before bed- well that’s what you get. Can you maybe play with him an hour or so before bed time? I know when Peanut was a puppy I had to play with him a little before bed time so he would sleep through the night. We had our little playtime, then made him potty and I gave him a treat. We did that every night and he knew the routine within a week. Peanut also slept with us, so I think that helped. Is Simba good on the bed? Can you throw him in with ya when he wakes up? I know they love to have that one on one attention, esp at night. I think they really sleep better when they are next to you.

| Thanks for the replay! I did try the treat when he comes in, but I also use a different treat when he goes. Maybe he's happy enough with the potty treat. I tried to have a slumber party with him. He did wake up and walked around a couple times, but nothing hyper. Thanks for the advice. As soon as we can trust him for not going potty at night, we will let him in the bed Thanks again! |

I would suggests just one treat when you come inside after he has gone potty. Cheerio's cereal work great. He may be associating treats with outdoor play time. So, he want to go out in order to get the treat. Could be you never know. Plus my guess is that restless time during the night is him letting you know it time to go potty. At that age their bladder are still quit small and they need to potty even after just a drink of water. Normally within 10-15 mins. I may help if you take up his water several hours before bed time and be sure he gets plenty of time to be taken out to empty his bladder before bed. My pups are all well trained but if I forget to take up their water and don't pup them out for that last potty break before bed time I sometimes wake up to a mess. So, that is important if you want to get him potty trained successfully. Does he use the pads during the night ?

| I gave treat right after his potty outside and another one inside. I'll do the only inside treat starting this week, I think he already gets the idea potty=outside. Yes! We have the same guess that he probably needs to go outside when he cries at night, but sometimes he would use the pee pee pad first and then cry (ask us to clean up :P) Yesterday, I put up the food around 8:15, but left the water down. And I put down the food around 10:30 before we sleep (I was afraid of the low blood sugar thing). And he ate like I have been starving him. Should I do this, put down the food again before bed? Or he should be okay without food from 8pm to 7am? How about water? We are going to have another slumber party tonight yay! |

I would also suggest that unless you want him to potty in your home that you get up with him and take him out to potty when he wakes up during the night. I know it hard and it wont be something you will need to do forever only until he gets bigger and can hold it until the am. I've heard of some people even setting an alarm so they can get up and take their pup out. Could be something for you to consider. Meanwhile feel free to look over my training tips below. There may be something that you find useful. I've raised many dogs in my life time and have done very well with them using the methods you will fine on my site.

2+2=4 X the Love ♥ Donating Member | Plus if you are worried about him not getting enough to eat. You may want to increase the number of his feeding during the day or up the amount that you are feeding him. But please don't feed him that late at night, I would hate for you to get into a situation that can not be so easily corrected later. Just remember bad habits are nothing more than learned behavior that just may end up becoming more than you bargained for !

| Simba LOVES boils chicken! I am feeding him three times a day now, but sometimes he doesn't eat right away. Maybe it takes some time for him to figure out if I don't eat now, I won't have food for the next several hours :P Simba still have accidents (#1) in the apartment couple times a day I've been taking him out every often and sometimes when he sees other dogs (there are 10+ dogs in my apartment complex) or people he gets distracted and forgets why he's outside. He's usually doing better when there's nobody out there. He slept really well for two nights now! Thanks all for the advice |

2+2=4 X the Love ♥ Donating Member | Wow, that's great news. Its good to hear that there has been some improvement with him ! Be sure that you are giving him tons of praise after each potty 1 & 2 let him know how happy you are with him. No treats necessary just lot and lots of praise. That is the way I have always done it. If you must save those treats for when you get back inside. Plus working with him to come to you when he needs to go potty will work wonders for a new pup who seems to be confused about where to go. You can find those methods of training on my web site also. Keep up the good work !
