| fetch Jess just doesn't seem to grasp fetch! She goes after it when I throw it but doesn't bring it back. Bites it a few times then drops it and trots back. Ive tried showing her, actually bringing it back and throwing it again and nothing, used treats nothing...any suggestions? |

| Try it with a leash. Just throw it a little ways and tug on her to come back when she picks it up. Say "bring it back" when you tug. If she doesn't, then walk with her on the leash to it and bring it back to where you were sitting/standing. I had to do it this way with Shelby-Dale. Mandie brings it back but she is not sure she wants me to have it when she does. She'll drop it about a foot from my reach lol

| I had to 'teach' Jackson. He would always play for a few minutes in our house, down the long hallway, but he would be done fairly quickly and lose interest. I've always wanted a dog who would fetch, so I just really worked on it. I got very excited, and would get him excited. He is more food motivated so I started using treats. I have a long 50 foot line that I put him on and I started throwing it short distances, and if he brought it back, he would get a treat. If he didn't, I would guide him back over to the ball, and he wouldn't get a treat until he picked it up and brought it back. It took about a year for him to fetch long distances and now he is obsessed. I bought a Chuck-it and throw the ball up a 3 acre hill and he LOOOVESS chasing it. He barks at me to throw it, and get so excited. He's also now catching frisbees. Now he considers the toy itself rewarding but I do still carry treats and give one every now and then so he never knows. But he thoroughly enjoys the game and is not doing it for the food anymore. It's a great thing to teach because it's great exercise when I feel like being lazy! lOL Check out Zak George on youtube (zakgeorge21), he has some great vids on fetching.

| I don't have any suggestions for teaching fetch, but had to share Lexi loves playing fetch and would play fetch 24/7. If I am standing still anywhere she brings her ball and drops it at my feet. I kick it for her because if I bend down to grab it, she grabs it and runs off. I still don't quite understand the rules she has, but she loves playing fetch. |

| I actually almost have her trained to roll over. Fetch? Nope. She just looks at me like "yeah no thanks" |

YT 2000 Club Donating Member | I like to build toy drive first before fetch, although from a young age, some pups really catch on fast to fetch. I have some pics on Magic Happy 5th birthday thread, that shows me on the floor with him 8wks old following a rubber ball with handle on it toy. And so it begins. Well actually it should have already begun at the breeders.. I like getting an assortment of different toys, Shapes, firm/soft, textured or not, ones that make squeaky noises, etc. And the only thing I usually leave out are the rope chews. Rest of the toys are kept either in our toy cupboard, or our water bag - for the water toys and that bag is kept in our car. Then it is so very exciting when I open the cupboard and get some toys out from the box. Also like to use the leash, and we start in the house first, then backyard, then front yard, and then out to various parks.

| I don't have any ideas on teaching fetch. Seems like Ruby was born to fetch. That's all she ever wants to play. Our other yorkie, Riley, doesn't care for it. He will get it, bring it back but only wants to tug-of-war with the toys. If I throw it again he gives me a look like, why would you do that? |

| Reign didn't fetch at first. I started slow. When he had something I wanted I'd say let me see. It was usually something he wanted to play with me with. Eventually, I would throw it a short distance and when he brought it back I'd give him a treat.
