YT 500 Club Member | issue in my house OK, I have a married son that lives with us. They have two mix breed dogs. The youngest a Queensland mix, is one years old. She has serious anxiety, seperation issues. So they want to crate her every time they go to work everyday. Anywhere between 4-8 hours a day. Because of her chewing on things, they think this will help prevent it. I don't agree, I don't believe crating a dog that long every day is humane. For potty training when a pup is fine, but for those reasons, I have to disagree. What does everyone else feel about crating to fix this problem?

Donating YT 3000 Club Member | Some dogs find it very safe to be in a crate. Others are worse being it. Did they try to leave him loose maybe in the kitchen gated?

| I don't believe in crating a dog that long either...what kind of life is it for a dog to be in a crate all day.

| destructive chewing is a symptom of separation anxiety and if training is not working you might need to look into medicine.

| I had a customer a few years ago with similar issue with a German shepherd pup. After finding out that the pup had to be crated for a few hours during the day, I tried to help them out with a better solution than a crate for a few hours during the day. Well, It was pretty easy for me to figure out, Since these people had a 2 story home and under the stairwell was a large storage closet. What I did was remove the door and cut it in half, Then I added a top ledge to the door and later on added a little window in the middle of the bottom section of the door. Here's a picture prior to the top ledge and the window. I never did take final completed pictures. But it turned out nice and everyone was pleased with the final results. The room itself was rather large even though in the pictures it seems small. http://i41.tinypic.com/b6dmkk.jpg http://i41.tinypic.com/i4mis1.jpg Last edited by Photog; 06-03-2013 at 07:25 PM. |

| Have they tried a Doggy Daycare 3-4 times a week? Or have a sitter come in to go for a walk and spend time with her?

| I don't think a crate or doggie jail is the answer.

| I like what Photog suggested, a bigger room than a bench would work. A place where the dog can stretch it's legs and can play around. Only one dog is kept in a bench? What about the other dog? Can't both be kept in the bathroom? Maybe if they are together. the dog with the problems will feel more comfortable?

| I put Jess in her 5 foot long crate when I go out for her safety. Unfort. I come home to her having poo'd and stepping in it and dragging it all over the crate. So I am thinking of giving her the family room. Im just worried she will hurt herself by jumping on furniture or something. The longest shes in the crate is a couple hours... |
