| I'm thinking of bell training Bentley I was just wondering how many of you have done this and if you have had success. |

2+2=4 X the Love ♥ Donating Member | I tried it with our first pup with not much success but my mother trained her dogs that way and it works great for her. They do ring the bell when they need to go out. Good LUck !

| I have had several of my new owners train their babies to do this....I personally think it is one of the cutest things I have ever heard of!! But they will sometimes learn that they can "fib" and ring the bell to go out to tinkle, and then when they come back in, they always get a treat....it was discovered they were doing the "potty maneuver" just to get a treat....which became evident when they were going out every 5-10 minutes! |

| I trained Abby to ring bells and spent a lot of time outside on false alarms, but now she is almost 2 and stopped going outside every two minutes. I started out with large jingle bells and a handful of treats and played the game every day. Next I tied the two bells together and played some more. Then we attached them to the baseboard near the garage door with a thumbtack-The bells hanging from the doorknob seemed to be too scary...- and played some more, this time opening the door everytime she rang them.Step by step over a month- it worked great. I even caught Ziva ringing them last week! (she thinks its a bit below her !) |

| Pebbles is trained to ring the bell and I think it's great - even if I happen to be upstairs I always know when she needs to go out when I hear that bell ringing. |

| I'm curious about this too. Not for ZoE, but my DD is getting a puppy next month & she plans on using bells on her door. How do you start out with a puppy? Do YOU ring the bell as you are taking it outside, so it associates the bell with going outside? Or do you put the pup's nose against the bells, so it's actually ringing the bells before going out? Do you also say the word potty, as you're doing it?

| Other members might have some better ideas but here's what I did: Starting off I rang the bell as we went outside. Plus I used the same phrase "Go potty outside?" each time I rang the bell. After a while, when I figured she had learned to associate the bell with going out I encouraged her to ring it. I first had to lift her little paw to bat at it, she quickly picked up that batting at the bell with her paws meant she would get out to potty. She did go through a short phase though where she kept hitting the bell just to play with it and hear it jingle and I would still have to take her out just in case! Hope this helps, this method worked well for Pebbles. She is 8 months now and has been fully house trained for months. |

| Blazer ended up learning to ring the bell on his own. Just after Thanksgiving last year I decorated for Christmas and hung a jingle bell door hanger on the front door. It automatically jangled when ever I opened the door to bring him out for potty and suddenly one day he just jingled them on his own! Later I found a single jingle bell on a satin cord to hang from the knob and he is a faithful user of that. I do end up letting him out for play time instead of potty breaks sometimes but he isn't doing it for treats, he just loves being outside! I also bring his bell with us when we go to my parent's house and ring it to show him which door it is on and he uses it every time after that. It's funny, when he started ringing the bell it wasn't just for him to go out- he rang it when our old, big dog needed to go out, too!

| I have Pooch Bells on my back door...three of my pups use them. They just figured it out on their own...the bells ring whenever they go out and I guess after a period of time...bingo! Cookie is hilarious...she hits the bells and then stares at me as if to say hurry up.

He does ring them now when he wants attention. I always know when Hulk is under-exercised...he lets us know. lol, other than that, I think it's a great system. | |
