| Night time potty training I have an 8 week old puppy. Last night was his first night in the crate in our room. I wasn't sure how often to leave him in their until I needed to take him out to potty. I've read so much about pottying at night and there are tons of suggestions. But I decided to let him tell me. He went 5 hours and then started to whine so I took him out to his puppy pad and he went pee within 30 seconds of being out. And I checked his crate and it was dry. So then I put him back in and he went 4 hours then until he started to whine again. He peed again within about a minute. And again his crate was dry. Is it ok to let him wake me up or do I have to set an alarm for every 2 or 3 hours and wake him up to see if he'll go potty? Thanks for any suggestions. |

| When we brought our puppy home, I wondered the same thing. What you want to do is make sure your puppy doesn't have any more room in her crate than she/he needs to turn around. I put a cardboard box covered in a towel inside our pup's crate. Since they don't like to potty where they sleep, they will wake you when they need to go potty. Princess Sophie would start to whimper when she needed to potty and since her crate was on my night stand right next to my head, I heard her immediately. It's kind of like having a skin baby, you wake up when you hear it. It worked great cause when they are little, their bladders are very tiny and they can't hold much. Also, don't ever withhold water from your pup. They can dehydrate very quickly. We never put water in her crate at night but did let her have access to drinking water when she was done going potty. Good luck, it's really easy to do successfully.

| That is great if he is alerting you at night when he needs to go, and you wake up. Keep doing it that way. 4 - 5 hours sounds about right at night. During the day, they will need to potty more.

| I used to set an alarm for 2 AM, and after a week, I realized that Bella could wake me up with her whining for a potty break. She hasn't wet her crate yet, and four weeks later, she can hold it until 4 AM. |
