| 7 weeks, dang and i thought Emma was young at 9 weeks. But when we got her she was 8 weeks, all i got to say is when you think she is going to pee put her on a pad and say pee pee here or whatever. I also fed Emma caned food for like 5 days then gradually mixed in hard |

| All the Yorkie experts here say that a pup should stay with it's mother for 10 to 12 weeks. Why are you getting yours at such a young age? Is this your choice - or do you have to take it at this age? I got my puppy at 8 weeks. Never had a problem. He was a good sized little guy. I am sure that helped. And, he had and still has a tremendous appetite. Plus, I held him constantly and slept with him from the get-go. So, he was never alone for the first few weeks. Even when I went back to work, I dropped him off at my sister's house where he could get his usual attention. So - my thinking is that if you have a good-sized little pup with a good appetite and can be with him constantly - you'll probably not have many problems. Otherwise - he should be older before you take him home. And ---all things being equal - these little pups (like everyone says) should probably stay with their mother at least until they are 10 weeks old. That would certainly be best. Carol Jean |

At least you have to make sure your puppy is big enough to go home with you. Most reputable breeder won't let their puppies go if they weight less than 2 lbs even if the puppy is over 12 weeks old. There is a very good reason behind it - they tend to have low blood sugar problem and it could become life-threatening. Another reason for waiting until the puppy is older is that they would know how to interact with other dog and not to bite hard. They play bite a lot so they really need to learn the limits from each other. You can teach you puppy not to bite hard yourself of course. Doggie interaction would require a bit more work on your part but it can be done. I would try to see whether the breeder can keep your puppy a bit longer. If not, I definitely would keep a very close eye on her to make sure her blood sugar doesn’t drop to a dangerous level. You would need to feed her 4 times a day – even in the middle of the night. Leaving the dry food out 24 hours a day is another option but would make potty training harder. I don't know what options do you have at this point so just be careful with her. With proper care, it would turn out alright. Last edited by amyann; 12-22-2005 at 04:31 PM.

| I got Bing at six weeks, 2 and a half years ago. He cried away for 3 weeks straight, so we had to put the dog with Suzie, my old breeding mini. sch. so he wouldn't complain. He had to be in my room! I got Gir at 12 weeks, never complained... he was only frightened when I took him in the car the first time.

| I'd get the dog at 10 weeks so it is fully weened though. Don't get it at 7, still too young.

| To Mellissa3674 . . . I got my Tiger when he was just 7 weeks old and being that he came from a breeder that has 6 boys of their own, he was very sociable already. He was almost pad trained too so now, after going on 4 weeks, he's just gotten better! He is fully pad trained and is very good at holding it for long periods. He has gotten used to entertaining himself whenever we are at work, but as soon as we get home, he's ready to have fun and be playful. Also, he now sleeps on my bed the entire night without needing to relieve himself. Just today, we were out shopping and taking him to meet friends of ours so he can get familiar with strangers, and during the entire 4 hours, he "held it" pretty good. Yorkies are wonderful adorable lap dogs and just loves to be held and cuddled. That is what I do most of the time when we are not playing. Here are my tips for you: Get those Deluxe Housebreaking pads at Walmart - they are very inexpensive and wonderful in getting them used to the pad. Lay them where you want him to relieve himself. Being that they are still very young, I try to give him enough pad so there is plenty of room . . .I double it - stapling them together. Give him lots and lots of cuddles so they know they are "loved". As soon as he has the required shots to get exposed to other dogs, sign him up for puppy training at petsmart right away . . .I tell you they learn very fast. My tiger learned to sit on command only after a few days of practice after his first lesson! Give him lots of chewable toys to entertain himself so he won't be chewing you your stuff. Give him the best food . . .anyway they don't eat much! Get him a harness - Walmart has them very inexpensive. I read that it is critical that they meet lots of strangers within their first 3 months so their social skills are well formed, so invite or take him to meet as many of your firiends as possible. . . .don't delay! |

| To Melissa3674 . . . .I don't know much about low blood sugar level but if your puppy is eating regularly based on the consumption he is prescribed by the breeder, then you need not worry. I used to give my Tiger soft food and then gradually mixing it with hard. That covers about 2 weeks before he is completely eating hard food. I use Innova puppy food as it is organic and all natural, with only vit C as the preservative . . . being that they are so tiny, they don't eat much so it is good to invest in a very nutritious meal. My Tiger was 2 lbs when I brought him home at 7 weeks . . . 4 weeks later, he is now almost #3. Have a wonderful time bonding with your newborn . . . and what a great christmas gift! |

The other thing is she might be doing fine during the day but having trouble during very early morning hours if you don't feed her in the middle of the night (if she is weight just about 2 lbs). I have had terrible experience with our little Maltese when she was 8 weeks old at 2 lbs. True is, little ones have very tiny stomach and can only eat a little at each meal. They really need 4 meals a day to maintain their normal blood sugar level. The breeder didn't tell me she needs to be feed 4 times a day and that almost cost her life. Her body was stiff when I got up one early Sunday morning and thank god I have the sense of feeding her sugar water - didn't thought of syrup then. That's just for a quick fix and then we had to take her to an animal ER. You can't really watch the sign in the middle of the night. I wasn't able to tell 'cause I thought she was suppose to be sleepy then (I got up every 2 to 3 hours to let her potty every night for the first 2 months). Please make sure she have one meal in the middle of the night as she is still too young (assuming you got one of the regular size puppy). Anyway, she is going to be a sweet heart and you are going to have a wonderful time together. I am sure you are well informed and will do whatever it takes to make sure your baby girl is safe and sound. Have fun together. By the way, we didn't get our baby Yorkie until she is 12 weeks old of course. We just won't take the chance of going thru it again. Last edited by amyann; 12-23-2005 at 10:52 AM.
