| Advice needed - housebreaking I just got my 7 week old puppy last Thursday. I've been trying out different things I've read online to try improving my success rate but have had some troubles so far. Was hoping to ask some yorkie veterans to give this amateur a tip or two. We've been pretty successful with #2. She'll hold it in til our next trip outside and if she can't, she'll whine to get my attention. #1 on the other hand is a different story. Before I got her I bought into the hype of the puppy apartment. Worked for a little bit but now she'll wait til I let her out and go on the floor. I posted a copy of our schedule as of right now. Do you think my work schedule will interfere in her training to the point where I'll never be able to fully housebreak her? Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Schedule on days I have to work Work from 4:30pm - 10:30pm, 5 days a week 08:00am - Outside 08:15am - Feeding time 10:30am - Outside 01:00pm - Feeding time 03:30pm - Outside 07:30pm - Feeding time 10:30pm - Outside Also whenever she wakes up from a nap - Outside. Schedule on days I am off of work 08:00am - Outside 08:15am - Feeding time 10:30am - Outside 01:00pm - Feeding time 03:30pm - Outside 06:00pm - Outside 07:30pm - Feeding time 08:30pm - Outside 10:30pm - Outside Also whenever she wakes up from a nap - Outside |

| I think the 1030 to 330 is way too long for your pup. At their age every two hours is the norm. I had good success with the puppy apt until she had to be crated due to a broken leg. She still hits it 80 percent of the time. I think you need to give the apt way more time |

| Thanks for the response. I do take her out whenever she gets up from a nap and she is always napping. There's always another trip outside between 10:30 - 3:30. I tried using the apartment again today. The weird thing that happens now is she'll sleep in her bed but then she'll get up and go to the pee pad and lie down. That pretty much means she needs to go outside. She's been doing it all day today. Not sure if she intends for it to happen or it's just a coincidence. I haven't really tried letting her roam a larger area yet, cause I'm liking the system right now. Last edited by MKnight24; 03-31-2013 at 07:16 PM. |

| Thanks. The problem is I don't think the pad is fully dry when she sleeps on it. Don't understand it since her bed is literally inches away. |

| At 7 weeks of age, Yorkie's don't really have control of their bladders. Their bladders are to little and they are too young. We had to bring Princess Sophie home at 9 weeks and we almost lost her on the ride home due to an attach of hypoglycemia. I learned from others on this site the importance of having Nutrical on hand with puppies this young. If you don't have any, you can also use [I]Kayro[I] syrup or even pancake syrup but really Nutrical is best. We are pad training Princess Sophie and at just days short of being 4 months old, she does pretty good as far as peeing goes. We do have some issues with her going #2 on the pad. Some days she does great and some days she just doesn't. I realize that at 4 months of age, who is really trained is us. LOL I know she will get it but some puppies aren't really, truly, potty trained till they are at least one year old. Sounds sad but that does happen. With our training, I have tethered Princess Sophie to me. She wears her harness and a short leash attached to my belt loop and she goes with me wherever I go. This way, if she starts sniffing around, I can take her right to her potty pad. BTW, she always gets a treat (we use little pieces of boiled chicken) when she uses the pad properly. Sophie is definitely treat trained. LOL I'm sure others on YT will also have important information to share with you as well and I want to encourage you to find out all you can about the Yorkie breed, if this is new to you because Yorkies are just different from other dog breeds. Good luck and again Welcome to YT and please post pictures when you can. We all love to see picts of everyone's fur babies!!

| She is still a baby. Princess Sophie did this for the first few weeks we had her at home, I would say...till she was about 11 or 12 weeks old. It's weird and they stink because of it but they are still just babies and need more time to grow out of it.

| Thanks for the info. I just received my yorkie yummies yesterday and she loves them more than she loves me. So hopefully I can use them to start training her. |

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | If she were still with the breeder, mother would begin potty training by pushing her over to the pee pad when she smelled urine in the bladder. I really think, you'd be better off keeping her in an x-pen with lots of pee pads and forget the training until she's older. Toy breeds don't mature as fast as larger breeds. I'm really disappointed that your breeder sold her so young, but your job is to make sure she stays healthy, don't worry about housebreaking yet. If you do it wrong, you will create more problems than you realize. At that age, 3 hours is way too long. Some can't hold it 15 minutes at that age, and I recommend food and water be available 24/7 if you want to prevent hypoglycemia, which can be deadly. What a little doll!

| Thanks for the info. I wish I could sense urine in her bladder. It would make things a lot easier. Speaking of hypoglycemia. She just got her shots again yesterday. They told me that she'd be tired and drowsy. My fault for not asking whether or not it would affect her appetite. Had to hand feed her last night and this morning. I thought she had hypoglycemia cause she was stumbling around and tired. Took her to the vet again and luckily they said it was because of the shots. Pretty terrifying. At what age do you recommend starting housebreaking? My vet told me to continue my routine. When I'm at home I take her out every time she gets up. She takes a lot of naps. So she goes out about every hour - hour and a half. |

| I'm not pleased with the breeder as well. I was told not to come get her until she was 8 weeks old, which was fine by me. I actually would have preferred for her to keep her longer. Had to haggle her down in price. I then received a call saying that she had people willing to pay for her at full price. She told me that she wanted to keep out deal but I had to come get her that night as I was walking to my car to go to work. So I went straight from work and drove about an hour and a half away to go get her. I'm glad I got her but I also agree it was too early. |

♥Love My 3 Furrbutts♥ Donating Member | She is a cutie...as others have said your baby is still waaaay to young to have any control over her bladder. I would recommend an ex-pen as well, that way she isn''t going potty where you don't want her too. Welcome to YT!
