| How to train a potty to tell you when he needs to go outside. I have a 4 1/2 month Yorkie (Tucker) who doing fairly well with potty training outside but was wondering if there are any suggestions on how to train Tucker to tell me he needs to go outside. We take him outside about every 2 hrs but I know hecan go longeras he holds it for 8 hrs in his crate at nite. I havea bell at the door that we ring everytime he goes out but it scares him more than anything. |

| What kind of bell? Mine were scared of the ones that hang on the door. The tell bell is much quieter. Tell Bell - Kelston Products Only one of my three use the bell. The other two never caught on. Not sure why. Last edited by Fatalivy; 03-20-2013 at 01:51 PM. |

| Have you taught him to "speak" on command? If so have him bark before you bring him out and hopefully he'll start doing it on his own. We use the bell here- it started with Christmas bells but now I just use a single, smaller bell on a string. |

| I was always worrying about using a bell since I have two cats who would love to ring that bell just to mess with me lol I wonder if there is another way I can teach Titus to let me know when he needs to go instead of taking him out so frequently. |

| Do you crate train? Puppies lack full bladder control until about 6 months. Until then it's their age in months + 1. So a 4 month old should be able to hold it's bladder for 4 to 5 hours. Every dog, including puppies, needs to go to bathroom first thing in the morning, just as people do. So the best way to find his tell is to take him out of his crate in the morning and put his leash on. Stand in front of the door for 30 seconds, if he doesn't do anything try again the next day till he does. He should do something such as whine, bark, scratch you or the door, or act different from normal in anyway. That will be your tell. This is coming from a Certified Pet Trainer. |

| Supervision is key when it comes to potty training. If you're eyes aren't on him then he needs to be put in a safe area. Their are several times when they need let out. 1. After eating 5-30 minutes due to gastrocolic reflex, and again 4-6 hours after for digestion 2. Excessive drinking 3. After 45-1hr of play (by themselves or with others) 4. Sleeping/naps 5. Leaving the crate at anytime 6. Excercise even a walk when they pottied several times 7. Anytime they act different then normal |

2+2=4 X the Love ♥ Donating Member | Its important that they know their name first so that you can call them to you. Calling them to you by name should become routine. This should become a common practice for you and your family members during free roaming and play time. This will give your new pup the skills needed to come to you and let you know that it is potty time instead of running off to potty in your home. First stetp is to call them to you, tell them to sit, than say "lets go outside and go potty". Of course in return you take them outside to go potty. This should become a normal routine for potty time and in no time at all your new pup will be coming to you and begging to go out and go potty. But be sure that unless you wish to be the primary puppy taker outer this practice should be practiced by all of the family members. You can find training tip on my web site below in my signature.

| You really don't have to train them to tell you. Usually if you take them out regularly, they will start to go to the door and whine, or stand at it and look at it and then you, paw at the door, sniff at the crack of the door that opens - things like that. Other dogs will stand still and stare at you and if you ask them if they need to go outside, they will jump about, go around in circles or otherwise indicate "YES!". Each dog will "tell" you in his own way. When he is doing any of those things he does to indicate it is potty time, you can then say "Bark" or "Circles!" or show him whatever you want him to do and when he does, treat him and take him right out. Then in time he will come and do that activity to get to go outside. But even without a bell or anything, a dog will let you know when he wants to go outside in time. Right now, you just watch for his body language to show you he needs to go such as circling, excited sniffing of the floor, running about sniffing, starting to move his tail up and down, staring/pawing/sniffing/barking at you or the door to the yard, or the obvious one - starting to squat or hump up. But as he learns more, he will start to focus on you or the door when he needs to go out and he'll let you know more in advance than he does now.

| We took a paw and had the pup actually hit (Just a light tap will do)the bell before we went out. They will quickly get over being scared of it and you will be surprised how quickly they catch on! |

| I keep all of Kimberly's things in a separate drawer, so each time we go out, I have to remove her harness and a sweater from the drawer. Every morning when I wake up, as soon as my feet touch the floor, she runs over and sits beside her drawer, I guess signaling for me to put her harness on her. We got caught in the rain the other day, so when we came in, I threw her sweater in the hamper. Later that night, when she finished eating, she climbed in the hamper and pulled it out, and came and dropped it on my feet! I took that as my cue to take her for a walk LOL |

YT 500 Club Member | I also use a bell. Taught her to tap the bell by holding her paw to tap it, then go outside and say potty. My older 7 year old has done it since he was a puppy. Ever since she was a pup, we've been doing this. She's a year now, and works great. Just have to be consistent at first. She's a year old now. Good luck. I use a jingle bell hanging on a string. Size is a walnut.
