Hi,
Don't know if you are still interested, but there is a product that i'm looking into. It's called puppy apartment. You can look it up on utube and watch the video. Hope this helps.

Think of the belly band as suran wrapping your chest. It's not comfortable. I'd stand too in one place. Crate training is a process not a quick fix. There could be several reasons for his marking. The pregnant female, a new pup or animal around or even lack of attention he's craving so he's doing bad traits to receive some attention.

Try figuring it one by process of elimination. Maybe watch for signs he's getting ready to mark and react to taking him outside to potty and play. Remember rewarding him when he does good.

In the long run, the belly band won't hurt him and it will give you some sense of mind. I know of others that have used them and I understand it does take a while for pups to get used to them...but they do get used to them. Stop feeling guilty...you'd feel much more frustrated and guilty if you never got him trained!!

You Can Do It and so can your pup!!

If you used him as a stud that is why he is doing that.

Use the belly band and then start all over with potty training. Riley had to wear one for awhile when he was older but now is doing fine without it. Just start over its the easiest

My boy didn't like his belly band at first either, I had to try a couple of different brands before I found one that was comfortable for him. Now he wears it with no problem if he wants to be anywhere in my house besides the kitchen. He was used for breeding, and at 9 yrs. old I don't expect him to stop the marking so this works great for us.

Dont consider the crate as punishment. Mine is restricted due to a leg injury and it most likely will end up saving her leg. You never know when that crate will be needed in his life so its not bad to get them conditioned to it. Its her safe place and I will use it forever now. Of course not like shes in it now but she will always have her own "safe spot"
I have a puppy apt that can actually expand. Now theres room for bed, food/ water and a cross through for potty from richell. Once shes healed I will expand it for her to have 5 feet of moving space. That way when we are out she has a totally safe apartment all her own with room to play. (I have 4 kids who as much as I try leave things on the ground. So I feel more comfortable that she can stay in the family room but doesnt have access to everything when we arent home) I wont have to pen her in the laundry room, which she hated) My house is large so she cant have the run of the place anyway, and the whole second floor is white carpets! It be like her own pee palace! They are the same color as her pads! ugh!
So shes watched 24/7 when she goes upstairs, which isnt often)
Good luck, i hope you find an answer.. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/images/icons/icon7.gif

I have no experience with this, but if he were neutered would this problem improve ?

my male is neutered and he STILL does it. I'm about to lose my mind with the whole situation and I too am frustrated. I'm so very in love with him or hubby would have booted him out by now.

Im sorry but this is just one of the things you have to consider and be able to tolerate when you breed. Your going to have to use the belly band

The post above is correct! If you breed, that is something that you must expect and be prepared for. Your male is doing the job he would be doing in nature. Marking his territory. He will continue to do it until he is fixed.....and any females he lives with are fixed. Even then, he may continue, as it is now a learned behavior.

If he just started doing this after 4 years something must have changed, or he could have an infection or health issue, have you ruled this out. IMO no one can really offer you advice unless you give us a lot more info. You did not mention your lifestyle or some of his behaviors, for instance does he do this when you are home or gone, does he do it shortly after going potty, does he lift his leg mostly in the same area of the house, does he lift his leg and almost nothing comes out. In regards to you, how many hours are you normally gone when you leave the home. Are others there when you are not. How does he normally go potty, inside or out, if he pottys outside how does he alert you he has to go out. If this is new behavior and health is not the issue, for some reason he has decided to start marking his territory, new pet, dog in heat, not enough attention, it's winter and he does not get out as much.

My last male was paper trained about 98 percent of the time; and used the paper about 10 times a day, but if I went to get the mail or take out the trash or did not carry him up the stairs when I went up 99 percent; of the time he would squat on the rug by the front door. I know that was not from having to go or even marking, that little bugger was showing me that he was pissed. Lola is 100 percent; housebroken and can go for 6 hours without needing to go out, but on a walk she sniffs and squats constantly and just a dribble comes out, she seems to marking her territory, which LOL the male dog never did. My male was neutered very young and was paper trained and he almost never lifted his leg even on a walk. So that's why I think that different wetting reasons might need different corrective actions.

To me the Belly Band and crate is necessary for your house not to be trashed but it will not cure the dog of lifting and marking, you have to get to the root of the problem or live with a dog always in a belly band. I see at a lot of the yorkie meetups that the stud dogs lift their legs more than the others do and they do so while wearing their belly bands. Yorkies especially males are much harder to house break than larger breeds but many people have been successful at it. It's also probably the number one reason they often wind up being given away. I wish you luck and if you give us some more info we might be able to help you a bit more.
