| Surface Preference? My Chewie is the greatest dog in the world , except when he is going potty on the carpet . I think he developed a carpet preference and I wonder how to teach him that is not ok... I read all the articles on how to teach them to go outside, but I want to teach him to go on the pads, not outside and have no idea how... I have those washable pads from EZwhelp ( I bought them because the breeder was using the same thing), and he knows he has to go there, but he "chooses" to forget sometimes, and goes on the carpet in front of the pads. I recently bought a pad holder, hoping that because it's a different surface underneath the pads he will make the distinction more easily, between the pad and carpet, and not miss, but I think now is worse because he "misses" more. He sleeps with us on the bed, and in the morning when I wake up I pick him up and put him on the pad and he does no.1. In the next half an hour he does no.2 (on the pad if he doesn't have access to the rest of the house. If I let him free in the house he goes no.2 in the living or dining - both places are out of sight, in the dining he goes behind the table and in the living in a corner that is the last part of the room you see when you enter.) I give him treats when he goes on the pad, and praise him, I don't scold him if i don't catch him in the act, just clean it and use Nature's miracle and still he misses. We were gone for 3 weeks for the holidays, and we left him with some friends, and they tried to make him go outside which he totally refused. He will wait until he came in the house and did No.2 there. From what I understood he only did No.2 on a carpet or rug, but No.1 he did it also on tile (which might be explainable by the different setting of the new house and lack of supervision). Please help me understand what am I doing wrong... |

| you need to watch him closely..when he has an accident you have to be sure your catching it say no and then bring him to the potty pad to show him this is the correct place to potty. you may want to be sure to clean those areas with an enzyme cleaner so it is removing the scent completely. good luck.

| Pad holders tend to cause problems, from what I have read. Try putting the pad on a slightly larger piece of linoleum or rubber piece, nothing with raised edges. This will help establish the "potty area" and distinguish it from the carpet. Great job with the praise and rewards, and cleaning the accident spots. Limit his freedom to a relatively confined area with the pad. Make it an area that you can supervise him. When he is alone, make the area really small, like a room or even an xpen. Do this until his habits improve and then slowly increase his freedom. Choose one or two places for the pad. Don't move the pads around the house. Make sure they are always convenient. If he is a little guy, make sure he doesn't have far to travel. Go nuts with the praise and make a big deal out of picking up the used pad. My boys seem to like that part and want the #2 picked up right away. Another thing that might help is a spray scent attractant on the pad. I know there are many advantages to washable pads, but one of the advantages of disposable is the infused scent attractant.

| Sounds like you aren't doing anything wrong. Just watch him more closely so you can prevent him going in the wrong place.

YT Addict | Maybe it's a male thing. Maggie is pretty much housebroken, Bogey is lifting his little leg all over the place. Tonight he lifted it and peed right on my husband who was playing with them on the family room floor !!! I think when it gets a little warmer and I can take him outside I'm going to try crate training and see if that works.

| Thanks for all the answers! I never move the pads, they are set in a corner of our bedroom, since he spends most of the day in the bedroom. I also created some sort of wall (from the side of a big box) so he can have a little more privacy, but that didn't seem to change things. We were thinking of changing the carpet in the near future with hardwood floor, but for that I need to be sure he is housebroken and he will not start making the new floor also . This is another question mark for me, Chewie is 9 months old, almost 10, he was neutered at 6 months, and he still marks when we go on a walk...I thought this habit will disappear after neutering... |

| We bought a 4x4 piece of linoleum flooring from home depot (off the roll) to put under the xpen. This saved our flooring in the early days!! As for making him use the pads....I just posted that we have started giving him treats every time he uses the pads, and now he has been almost a week without any accidents... BUT if you are already doing that, and your little guy doesn't like the pee pad holder... He may not be like mine. Tonka took to the holder right away, and it helped a lot. |

| I don't think I want something that is closer to carpet, as he will never learn the difference... I just got a call from my boyfriend that he found a puddle in our bed . It happened before (about a month ago, on the corner of the bed) and I thought he might have been confused, but now it is right in the middle of the bed. Anyone has an idea why? I mean he sleeps with us, so that is his bed also, and he doesn't have a preference for a particular spot, he moves around all night... I read on google that it might be dominance, or insecurity (trying to hide his smell in ours) but how do I identify it and correct it? I don't think is a UTI, because he doesn't go very often ( I think yesterday afternoon he went twice and he drinks a lot of water, he always did since we had him) |

| It very well could be dominance. Yes. That was my first thought about peeing in the bed. I would learn how to dominate properly though. I'm sure there are books about it but for me and my family we watched Cesar Millan's shows all the time and learned it through them. My dog is well balanced mentally now and knows that he is to go potty on the pads. Though he gets confused if we have welcome mats at the door inside to wipe our shoes on. I'm not sure how to fix that issue. So we just pick up the rugs and dont use them anymore. I'd google "pack leadership with dogs" or something similar and read up on it. And even if that doesn't work to stop the random peeing issue it is still good to learn to help keep the balance in the household.

One never knows if the a spay or neuter will stop them from marking. However, marking outside is not the same as marking inside. I know dogs that only mark outside. Maybe try a belly band. I hear that is good at preventing marking. aLSO WITH HIM MISSING THE PAD, MAYBE BUY SOME LARGER ONES. Sorry caps, but I'm too lazy to re write that.
