| Suggestions on Yorkie puppy sleeping with me Hello everyone. I have had my 7 week old yorkie puppy for about 3 days now. He is doing very well with potty training so far. We both work long hours during the day and leave the house around 7:15 am and won't return home until around 4:00 pm and sometimes not even until 5:30 or so. We are keeping him in a crate during those hours. We were wondering if it's ok to let him sleep in bed with us that way he isn't in his crate for 8 hours at night and then another 9 or so while we are at work? We don't want him to get depressed/lonely. We thought about putting him in a small shoebox type box and making a bed in it and sitting it on our bed while we sleep. That way he can't escape or potty in our bed, but, he will still know we are there. Tips/suggestions? |

| Welcome to YT I would say try a ex-pen or a small room like the bathroom when you're gone, then he could have a potty pad and a bed and toys. Is someone taking him potty while you're at work? |

| No, that is the problem. Nobody to take him out while we are at work. Once he is potty trained, I plan to bring him to work with me so he isn't there all the time alone but my boss says no until it's potty trained. I think we are going to try putting him in our small bathroom with the pee pad, blanket and toys. |

| Your puppy is much to young to be alone that long. Your pup needs to eat every 2 hours or he could get hypoglycemia and if no one is there to watch your pup and help them when then are having a hypoglycemic episode they will die.

| That is great that you can take your puppy to work with you (eventually), I would love to do the same! Why don't you have him sleep in your bedroom, but in his own bed? We had Dex doing that for some time, but now we are keeping him in the crate (just until he is potty trained). I think as long as you are in the room he will feel comfortable. With him sleeping in your bed he could fall of the bed (by trying to jump of while you are sleeping) or u could accidentally roll onto him. As much as I love to cuddle with my little baby, I don't want him in the bed with us But he does like his big boy bed |

| Hi Meagan! I have a new puppy too but she sleeps in our room at night. She sleeps in a crate by our bed on our night stand and she sleeps well. I take her out every 4 hours to pee and then put her right back into her crate. She loves our bed and we messed up one of the first nights by letting her fall asleep there while we were up late. She did not want to go into her crate! She wanted to sleep with us! As tempting as that was, I could not let that happen because I was scared of her falling off our bed or us rolling over on top of her. The next best thing was the crate and that's the night we started using it. She cried cried cried but then noticed nothing would happen if she kept at it and settled down. I would also caution you about taking your little boy to work so young. I would wait until he gets his last booster shots. They can get diseases from other dogs, and even if they (the other dogs) are vaccinated, it's a big risk. I wish I could take my little one to work! Do you have any family that can come over during the day and play with him a little or check on him? It's not much help really but I turned the camera on on our computer once and was able to watch her from work hehe (sounds creepy right?) I couldn't play with her obviously but I could watch what she was up to and if she was eating and behaving while home alone. She usually just slept a lot... What about lunch time? Is there any way you can drive home for lunch to be with him for a little bit? Maybe you and your spouse can take turns? Just some suggestions cause he's so small and can get lonely.

| I'm sure you do not know this, but taking a Yorkie from it's mother before it's 12 weeks old can create problems. The most important is health. Your puppy needs to eat about every three hours. You should also be home or have someone else take care of him during the day. You need to have Nutri-Cal on hand if he isn't eating. Juvenile hypoglycemia is common in puppies because they have not fully developed the ability to regulate their blood glucose concentration and have a high requirement for glucose. Stress, cold, malnutrition, and intestinal parasites are problems that may precipitate a bout of juvenile hypoglycemia. Toy breed dogs less than three months of age are most commonly affected. Please don't sleep with him until he is completely house trained and big enough that he won't be falling off the bed. He needs his own bed right now.

| The usual rule of thumb is you can leave them alone one hour for every month of age they are. So your young pup should not be left alone for more than two hours at this age. When we got our guy my husband and I took turns coming home around lunch time to take him out. At his age he needs to eat at least 3 times a day. When we could finally eliminate the lunch meal , that is when we left him all day. One day when we could not leave to run home, I took him to work with me. No chance of accidents there since i took his crate with me. Can't you take him now if he is crated anyway? |
