| Do all your dogs bark a lot? I can tell already that my little dog is going to be more of a barker than I am used to. I certainly can't complain yet - he has had only two barking spells so far - and I have had him about six weeks. But, I can tell he has it in him to become a good little barker. When one of my other dogs was young --- whenever she started barking, I would put her on my lap, and everytime she barked, I'd hold her face, look her in the eyes, and say, "No." If she barked again, I'd hold her face and look in in the eyes and say "No" again. We often sounded like - "bark - no - bark -no - bark - no" for quit a while. She really didn't enjoy this and would quit barking. Then I would try and get her interested in something else - and away from whatever caused her to bark in the first place. Later, when she was a little older, if she wanted to bark at something, she'd look around to see if I was coming for her. If she saw me, she'd usually decide to postpone her barking until later -- hopefully when I wasn't around. This helped me curb the barking with my other dogs. Of course, they still barked occasionally, but not often. What do you guys do to keep your dogs from barking a lot? I'm ready for all the advise I can get. Thanks --- Carol Jean |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | Cali only barks when she is sleeping and hears someone come in or occassionaly when she wants something. It is the worse sounding bark, like she is getting murdered! Now I havea 8 yo pom who barks ALL of the time, it is so horrible we have never been able to control her barking. She will bark at me for 10 minutes for no apparent reason, she barks when I'm getting her food ready,if you mention the word door or out etc. My other 3 yorkies that I had in the past never barked?! I am afraid thay my pom will train Cali to bark.

I wish I had good advise for you but I don't as I am working with a pack rather than one so it is different. On the other hand I feel perfectly safe in my house and I know no one is going to come into my house without being announced so I take comfort in that. Good Luck

| SnowWa, I love your technique. I think I should give it a shot. You just hold her face and say No or you close your dogs mouth from barking and then say no? |

| lucky for me, bunjee's not a big barker and i hope it stays that way. he used to bark a lot when he's seeking attention, when he's crated, and in general whenever i leave his sight. to break him of those habits, i used a spray bottle and sprayed him whenever he barked. now he only barks or whines under certain circumstances, usually to tell me something: - want attention from me, usually to play, but usually for a minute or two and never for more than 5 mins now and he's keeping it to a minimum - when he gets a shot at the dr's office (totally understandable) - when he's crated, he'll whine or bark when he needs to go potty (i'm okay with that too, but if i let him out and he doesn't go potty in 5 minutes, then back in the crate he goes, no petting, no playing, no treat) - he'll whine or bark every harder if he's soiled his crate (understandable too) - if he's gone poo on his potty pad without me being present, he'll bark for my attention and get me to clean the sh*t up... quite literally, and will go back to his quiet self after that. (this one just cracks me up) - he'll bark when dogs that he's not comfortable with gets too close to him (understandable as well) |

| Wosie just discovered her voice 6 month old Wosie just discovered this past week that barking is a lot of fun! After trying a firm "no barking" with a finger wag, we resorted to the penny can trick, and presto! No barking! It only took about 3 shakes of the can. I am truly amazed how quickly she learns. Now we just have to say no barking and she stops. I sure do love this little pup! Good luck!

| I had heard to fill a spray bottle with water and squirt Louie when he barked. I did this and it really works. Now he just see's the bottle and changes his mind whenever he is about to bark. So now I dont even have to spray him . I also heard of people putting coins in a can and shaking them. (that tip was on the show "the dog whisperer". and it really seemed to work because (ironicly) they do not like the loud noise! haha go figure. But good luck with this and let me know if my tips worked at all. |

| Boy you have all given me some great training ideas. I too however have that pack thing going here with 6 yorkies and a poodle. Now believe it or not , the poodle is the old man of the bunch and I can't break him of barking at the Fed-X. UPS and mail lady but the dustmops all do well with a no bark command ,sure ,right after they get done barking anyway. LOL I wonder if its too late to try the pennies in a can though. Can you tell me more or is it as simple as it sounds. Just a few pennies in a metal can ?

| Jade and Mitsou were abandoned at the shelter because the owners said that they barked too much . Sincerly , since they are home with me , I only hear them bark when someone is at the door . Nathan is discovering that he can bark so everytimes I hear him bark for nothing I say a loud no and he stop . I will not allow him to excessive barking now because he have a funny voice and punish him for doing it as adult . IMO...good manners should be teach when they are young . |

| Chachi barks alot when someone comes to the door . Its very annoying and the only way we can get him to stop is to get out the spray bottle. That works for immediate but it doesnt stop him from barking the next time.

| Kelsey is bad with this... lateley when she wants attention she will sit, stare and bark at me with her toy in her mouth or at my hand...also if she hears a noise of course outside or anything she thinks could be an outside noise. If I even move a peice of paper the wrong way she will go nuts....everything scares her! I try to tell her "NO bark bad girl" and she just keeps it up..so annoying! But lately i've been putting her in a time out corner and it seems to be working.

| Muffin used to bark a lot. Of course, she had all kinds of excuses. There was just so much to bark at! Squirrels, kitties, joggers, bikers, walkers, UPS trucks! You name it. But she was having fun and it wasn't non-stop, so it was not a bother. I expect a bark when they see something. They are my watch dogs, so if they don't tell me when something is amiss then how am I to know? Kacee is another story. She very, very seldom barks. They are all so different, aren't they?
