| How to train to stop #2 in house Hello, a lot of you may be familiar with my story. I was fortunate enough to land a beautiful 3.5 year old show quality Yorkshire Terrier from a lady who had 6 yorkies, and was trying to get a couple of them started in dog shows, after my "heart" Yorkie passed away in July. In fact she had a partner who was part owner of the Yorkie I bought from her, who is in the upper echelon of AKC in his area, for whatever that is worth. Anyway, for some strange reason, which I never asked her about, the dog wasn't poddy (potty?) trained, #1 or #2. He had a belly band on him, to keep him from urinating around the house and marking. I supposed that he had to be kept "intact" to be a show dog, I'm not sure about that. But I'm guessing that is why they kept him "intact". But, here is my problem. We can't seem to get him trained not to go #2 in the house. Sometimes we think we have the problem licked, and the next thing we know, we have a pile of doo somewhere (normally under my grand piano). Maybe he's just trying to tell me what he thinks of my piano playing (ha! ha!) But seriously, could any of you wonderful yorkie lovers, who are much better at training dogs than I am, give me any ideas on how to train him from going #2 in the house? Training him not to go #1 in the house seemed to be pretty easy. We left the belly band on him, except when taking him outside, and of course encouraged him to go potty outside, and rewarded him with a small treat when he was successful. That went really well and really only took about 10 days to 2 weeks to accomplish. Within just a couple of days, he stopped urinating in the belly band, and after going for about 10 days without soiling it at all, we took it off of him for good, and I've never seen any evidence that he has gone #1 in the house. But the #2 on the other hand, has not been nearly so easy. Of course, there aren't as many teaching opportunities when it comes to training them not to go # 2 in the house, as there are # 1, since they go #1 about 5 or 6 times a day, and if you're using a real good grade of dog food, only go # 2 about once a day - and usually not more than twice. So, that in and of itself makes training them not to go #2 inside more difficult. But, I'm just going on and on, and obviously, I'm not doing it right, or he'd be totally housebroken by now. I've had him since early August. So, if any of you have any good ideas on how to train him not to go # 2 in the house, I sure would appreciate it! Thanks so much. Other than this issue, he's just a great dog, and just a marvelous and wonderful companion. The answer to my prayers after my other Yorkshire Terrier passed away due to kidney failure at 13 years/10 months. Thanks again! |

♥Love My 3 Furrbutts♥ Donating Member | Personally I would go back to square one and get him on a schedule..that way you can gage when he needs to go. Is he crate trained? I have found that that is the easiest way to go along with getting him on a feeding/potty schedule. I'm no expert as mine are NOW potty trained, but it did take me almost a year to get that accomplished. Someone here with more experience will pipe in I'm sure and give you more pointers. I'm sorry for the loss of your other yorkie...they always capture a piece of our hearts that remains theirs for a life time.

| I'm sorry - I'm not sure what being crate trained means. This dog was supposed to be crate trained. And, from what I understand (which isn't much), I've read and heard that most dogs won't doo-doo in their crate, provided the crate is small enough. Is that waht crate trained means? I was half way thinking of getting those diapers and put them on him, and then just take them off when he goes out, until he gets into the habit of just poo-pooing outside. It sure seemed to work with the belly band. I mean, there's no way he goes #1 in the house. You can tell when he really has to go, he lets me know, and then goes as soon as he goes out. The other problem with potty breaking him too is that he enjoys running in the back yard so much. We have a big back yard, and lots of dogs around, so he just enjoys going out and running around and yapping at the other dogs. And, I still don't think that he associates going out in the backyard with getting his business done (except for #1 - he does know when to do that). But, I think he associates going outside with just running around and having fun. My other two dogs, I had since they were pups, and they quickly associated going outside with getting their business done. He just enjoys going out and running around and having a good time. Not to mention, he will be 4 years old in December, so he is already pretty set in his ways - most of which are wonderful. And, I have learned this one thing in 14 years of owning dogs. They will do the same thing, the same way every time, unless trained to do differently. So, I'm not blaming the little guy for not being potty trained for #2. It isn't his fault. It is our poor training abilities. If we were better trainers, he'd be trained much quicker than in 3 months. He pretty much eats twice a day at the same times every day - 6 am and 5 pm, and with the premium dog food I use, which doesn't have much filler in it, generally goes #2 just once a day, and that is generally between 6 and 8 or 9 am in the morning. So, that is basically his schedule. Eat at 6 am and 5 pm, and #2 not long after breakfast. Hope that helps you all to help me get him trained. Thanks again! |

Donating YT 3000 Club Member | I would get the book, how to housebreak your dog in 7 days How to Housebreak Your Dog in 7 Days (Revised):... It can really help you with crate training and also getting him to go outside. |

How long after he eats, does he need to go...you can gage this by keeping a real close eye on him...Jersey usually has to go within an hour of eating, as soon as she starts sniffing around, I know its time to take her out...this works for me....she's getting it, slowly, but surely. She most of the time, lets me know when she needs to go...she is only 5mths so if I dont watch her she does still forget, and will find a spot in the house if I don't catch her in time.... Her fav spot was behind the tv, solved that little problem by blocking that area off....out of sight is into trouble, I keep her in my line of vision at all times....if I can't watch her, she is confined. Hope this helps

| Requested book.. Thank you all for your advice. For the time being I've requested the book about housebreaking the dog in 7 days from my local library. Hopefully it'll work for me. And, if needed for longer and find I think it is good, will buy it on the Kindle. One of the other problems with this little guy's #2 habits is he is as quick as lightning. I'm not around him all the time, but when I have been around him and been able to catch him before he goes, it is a miracle to be able to catch him. Because when he decides to go, he doesn't sniff around hardly at all...and he is like I said, as quick as greased lightning. Incredibly difficult to catch before he actually does the deed. I mean, he's done before you've blinked, and generally doesn't circle or anything. So, will give that method a try, unless some better ideas come along... I mean it'll be free Thank you so much! He's a wonderful little guy, and he is extremely devoted to me, in just 3 months. I certainly would not want to lose his companionship, as he is the best canine companion that I've ever had. And, just a beautiful specimen of Yorkie, with a very sweet temperament, and actually other than having trouble housebreaking, pretty obedient...even for someone who is a novice dog trainer, like myself. | I am not fully through the potty-training phase.. but through some of the posts I've read on here, I think I am on my way to getting my little Colby to understand that pooping should only go on outside! We haven't had any accidents in a week because my bf and I keep direct supervision on the puppy at all times. If we cant watch him, we crate him. If he is not in the crate, then he is right next to us the whole time. Like someone mentioned earlier, by getting your doggy on a schedule, you can predict his/her potty habits. I usually take Colby out a half-hour to an hour after he eats(and he always eats at the same time everyday)... if he doesn't go #2, he goes back in the crate or next to me. I take him out every 15 min until he finally goes, and he gets a reward for going. It was tiring at first, getting up all the time to take him out but he seems to be getting the hang of it. I am still not giving him freedom of the house because he has not been accident-free long enough but that's my goal down the line. Also, I got a crate large enough where he can lay down and hang out comfortably, but small enough so that he can't poop on side and lay down on the other. He has his bed, blanket and favorite toy in there. He is not the biggest fan of his crate yet, but every time he walks in, I give him a treat so that eventually he will go into the crate willingly on my command. Good luck on your potty training! If you give your doggy a schedule and firmly stick to it, I think he will quickly learn! =) |
